Re: 1996 f250 with 5.8 eng when i change over to front...
Sounds like old gas, or water in this front tank, could also be fuel filter if each tank has seperate filter. If gas is old remove if not old check/replace filter.

Technically it shouldn't happen. The sock filter for the pump is about a quarter inch off the bottom of the tank. As long as there is a couple of gallons of gas in the tank it should not matter what the truck is doing. Its possible the filter is damaged or not in the right place, or the sending unit is off and you have less gas than you think. I should also tell you running the truck with less than a quarter tank of fuel is tough on the pump and will shorten the life of it. The pump uses gasoline for lubrication and to keep it cool.
Had a similiar problem with a 1998 3800 V-6...the problem was the crank position sensor...The harmonic balancer usually needs to be pulled to switch out this sensor...located slightly behind the fly-wheel...part is about $35...Nice car, and it sounds like you know what you are doing...:)
try checking your carberator screw setting or have you though maybe you gas tank needs to be replaced sometime gook builds up on the bottom of your tank, and did you change all you fuel filters there is also one under the car in the back......also did you gap your spark plugs right...
