Yes because you don't have clearance to do it and the experience to make a tool to get in to get it out and put it back in making it is problematic and it will be quicker and easier to jut remove it and properly clean the surfaces
So, when removing the sender, do you have to remove the entire intake manifold?

I do believe the cylinder head temp sender is screwed in the head under the front edge of the intake, behind the alternator. Drivers head

Make sure that is the sensor. That should be your oil pressure sensor. Follow the top radiator hose to the thermostat look closest to that for the wire going to the sensor. This should be the temp sensor. Good luck

I'm not sure if yours is identical to mine since yours is second gen and mine is third gen, but with mine (1998 MGM), the heat was stuck on all the time. Full heat would practically cook your feet and you couldn't shut it off.
It was a servo/servo arm that controls the hot/cold mix door. The part was $15. The labor was $700. They had to take the entire dash out of the car to get at the part. Required two more visits due to a missed electrical connection to a daylight sensor and a vacuum issue that made the car stall when put into reverse.
My car had 150K on it at the time. Has 165K on it now. Still runs great and looks great. It's now my wife's auto and I drive a 2006 MGM.

its simple to do. just unplug the sensor and unscrew it. if its frozen and hard to break loose, then just heat the base the part of exhaust that it goes into.

I forgot to tell you it can be in either head but most are in the left cylinder head the engines come with sockets for both heads in case of rusted out or broken sensors in the head ok
Also the sensor is baked in after almost 18 years of service and it can break off that's why there are sockets in each head just in case it does and while your in there check the Condition of the bypass tube that goes into the water pump there's a nipple there and a hose on the tubing those 2 are prone to rupture and rust out and this is a good time to change it while you have access to it
