When i step on the gas pedal the engine sound gets louder and becomes a high pitched scream. when i take my foot off the gas pedal it still whines. the sound begins as soon as i start driving and sometimes not until after driving a few minutes.
Have you crawled under the vehicle and personally inspected your exhaust line from manifold to tail pipe? The roaring sound usually occur when there is a hole in the exhaust line. I had it happen to my forester before. A hole half the size of a dime made my subaru sound like my old 74 chevy pickup.
I listened to a few parts of my 03 forester engine with a stethoscope. I had the same high pitched whine that gets louder when I accelerate. I've even had friends that ask if I have a turbo haha. Anyway, I thought it was a pulley, but it appears to be the power steering pump that makes the noise. It wasn't suggested to me that a new pump was needed, but I might replace it one day to get rid of the noise.

I have a 99 impreza with a forester engine. It also sounds like a jet. it wines and stops, whines and stops, constant. It gets louder when I step on it. I know it had work done and has new clutch. It supposedly has a high compression engine?
I have this EXACT problem you describe. I fear it is a center differential (based on other boards)
FYI - have a 99 Forester Manual. This problem is unique to the manual tranny

I have Subaru Forester, 2002. Bought it with 67k miles, in amazing condition, but, have a feeling that this whiny noise is growing.
Maybe something noisy in the transmission (rear end, as my mechanic suggested?)
Happens only in gear, only when accelerating. On highway, I switched neutral, and the noise disappeared, and when I was cruising, the sound was softer when I was going downhill. Didn't try reverse.
My theories are somewhere between air intake, and gear.
Any idea, anybody? Subaru, where are you?
have you checked your belts for looseness?
