1996 Honda Accord Running lean after changing tune up and new oxygen sensors.

I have a 1996 Honda Accord Automatic. My check engine light comes on and I checked the codes and it says i am running lean. I have changed both oxygen sensors and had a tune up so the spark plugs and wiring are all changed but I keep getting that code. what else could it be?

  • Anonymous Jul 02, 2012

I had the have the transmission replaced. Since it was replaced, it still hesitates a little. Sometimes the light blinks but when I let off the gas the engine like then stays solid. This ALL started after I went to Wal-mart and got the system flush that was supposed to help improve the gas miliage. Ever since then the engine light has stayed on even after changing both oxygen sensors and getting a complete tune up.

My first thought was fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure would cause the engine to go lean but not set a code for the actual problem.
Is it possible the fuel filter is clogged ? Have you checked fuel pressure?

  • Anonymous Jul 02, 2012

No I have not checked the fuel pressure. Where would be the best place to check it. I am a handy female and like to try everything once. If it is something i can do my self how would I be able to do so?

At the very least you would need a fuel pressure gauge which is a special tool.
There may be a port on the fuel rail to access, or you may have to take the fuel line apart and use an adapter to Tee into the line.
    I would recommend a shop.

SOURCE: check engine light for 1995 honda accord lx wont turn off

First off, Hondas do not run MAF. If the car seems like it is driving better than before the light came on, it could be that the code just hasnt cleared yet. My 95 accord did the same after a fix, I just had to drive it to run the drive cycles.

Hi,welcome to fix ya.
p0171 is for a lean fuel condition .A variety of things can cause this code the most common one is a bad o2 sensor but a plugged injector, fuel filter or dirty egr system can cause this as well.

I have a 1996 Honda Accord EX. It was just serviced 0n 09/11. The following day the engine over heated and then the Engine Light went on. Brought it back to Valvoline, Guilford CT and they provided these...

http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/ here features your problem codes. 401 is an EGR or exhaust gas recirculation problem. saying exhaust gas is not getting back to the intake. this is almost a non issue. its there purely to help reduce emissions by your vehicle and a by product is actually more heat being shunted back to the motor and less power as bad gas gets mixed with good oxygen. the other is an oxygen sensor malfunction. this is concerning as the computer may be telling the engine to "Lean out" the fuel. pushing less fuel into half or all of the engines cylinders and when it burns it burns much hotter than a "rich" mixture. head to this link and start checking your engine for loose, cracked or damaged little black hoses called vacuum lines. http://www.obd-codes.com/p0171 that is likely why your engine cooked. the mechanic may have spilt oil onto the sensor too.

1996 Honda Accord scanner threw out codes for VSS and oxygen sensor, it this a major issue?

yes those are an issue, not as major as a blown motor, but still an issue. the vss ( vehicle speed sensor )is located on the transmission and is fa countermainshaftsensor8wp.jpgeasy to replace.the o2 sensors tell the cars computer if it is running lean ( too much air ) running rich ( too much fuel ) so if you have a bad o2 sensor your car may think it is running lean so it may reduce amount of air or increase the amount of fuel. a bad o2 sensor will reduce your fuel mileage quit a bit. hope this helps, let me know

My honda accord 96 has check engine light on, how to fix this problem?

Probably an 02 (oxygen) sensor or maybe a vacuum problem as simple tightening your gas cap. There are two 2 sensors in most cars so you have to figure out which one it is, or bring it to the service station. You can't pass inspection in most states with the "check engine" light on.

I just replaced the O2 sensor in my 1996 Honda Accord EX and the check engine light came back on saying that the car is "running lean." What does that mean and where do I start to look on how to fix this...

If you are near a chain auto parts store, they may reset your computer free; call them.
Running 'lean' means the fuel-air mixture is not ideal and the amount of fuel being injected is less than it should be relative to the air coming in. Running rich is the opposite. A lean burn can cause excessive heat and do some damage if extreme enough. The discoloration of the spark plugs will sometimes show this condition by having deposits that are a bit too light; they should normally show a beige or light brown coating after some miles are on them.
I think the computer should somewhat compensate for a dirty air filter but it wouldn't take long to check it.

I have a Honda Accord 2003, how can i fix a downstraem Oxygen sensor.. does this affect the gas cosumtion performance.. how can i fix this.. Help.!

o2 sensor is very important part to the engine when it come to the fuel economy. o2 sensor send information to the computer (ECU) which compute and calculate ratio of burnt exhaust gases. if the engine is not run properly either is too lean or too rich the o2 sensor will detect it as the car will triger the check engine light. you can drive the vehicle which will not hurt it as long you can tolerated the light however the car will get terrible gas mileage and poor performance as the ECU will try to lean the engine out itself. o2 sensor is fairly cheap to replace and fix. Let assume the car get 30 mpg on the high way, running with check engine light/bad o2 sensor will change the gas mileage to 18-25 mpg. If the car is V6 make sure you replace o2 on both side. good luck!
