1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4X4 - Truck wont go in reverse - shifts fine going forward in all gears - Is there a band in the tranny for reverse or do I need a new tranny. Tranny (automatic)has been running perfect - no issues no sign that it was going out. shifting great. - When I put the truck in reverse there was a clunk - and the truck wouldnt go backwards, put it in drive and drove it home.

i do believe they are different transmissions. i know my '95 chevy pickup 5.7 is a one year only transmission for correct fit. best thing to do is call local junkyard. they have great interchange guides and could tell you if it will work and what things may need to be changed

SOURCE: 2002 neon tranny faiure??
I had the same problem driving along and had to coast over to the side of the road. 92000km. all the clutches in the tranny were gone and all kinds of filings in filter and pan. the tranny had to be rebuilt at dealer for $1895 canadian Sorry for this news I also thought it slipped into neutral and wouldn't move no matter where I put the shifter

SOURCE: what kind of tranny will work to replace mine?
Yes. They should both be 46RE transmissions and the bolt patterns and the plugs should be the same.

if you mean the truck won't move when its in gear, i would definitely take it back to the shop, if the vehicle has high mileage, they shouldn't have recommended a flush, that is a common mistake, when you flush the transmission fluid out of a vehicle with high mileage, your flushing out all the friction material in the trans and then the trans won't work properly or at all. i work at a shop and unless the vehicle has had routine flushes, i won't do a transmission flush on a vehicle that has 80k miles or over that unless the customer insists, then i tell them there is a chance the trans could break down! but yea other than checking the fluid to make sure its full i'd take it back to the shop and have them pay for the tow and have them look it over in case they messed it up, then you shouldn't have to pay!
