Do I have a possible IAC valve problem?

Engine revving high. When I disconnect the IAC valve, engine stops idling high but it is still rough. When I put the IAC back, it revs up high again. Already checked for vacuum leaks and didn't find any. How do I bench test the IAC valve? Could this be the problem?

Thanks for the reply. So it's not the IAC. Got a new one and the values are the same as mine. I'm thinking now that it may be the MAP sensor. Before I buy a new one, does anyone know how to test it first? Thanks.

generally with a bad map sensor, the vehicle will run(Idle) fine, but won't rev up normally. to test, remove the vacuum hose(or unbolt it from the monifold, not sure the configuration on your vehicle) get a "suction hand pump" and put that on the nipple.

The problem could be quite a few different things though, for better diagnosing what year, make, model is your vehicle?

My car is a 2001 Hyundai Elantra. I was trying to check the MAP sensor by reading the volt to see if it's normal. I know the RED wire should be 5 volt (and it is) but I don't know which colour the SIGNAL wire is to check it. Thanks for the quick reply and I will try what you suggested.

On most vehicles the signal wire is normally white, However, I'm unsure on your hyundai (Can't seem to find color code for the sensor wires!)

I wanted to ask, about the map sensor, you said the "values" of a new one are the same as yours. I'm not exactly sure what you mean. The resistance? Just curious, i've seen Some have "new" resistance and be stuck open.closed!

Oh I mean the values on a new IAC valve has the same values on my current IAC valve. That's why I'm thinking that my IAC valve is ok and it could be my MAP sensor. I also checked for vacuum leaks...no leaks. Thanks.

Thanks for you help markb2003. Problem is solved. So it turned out to be an intermittent vacuum leak between the 3rd and 4th cylinder gasket. The gasket was broken and stuck. Map sensor needed replacing too because it had a high value resistance between the map sensor terminals (15 k-ohms) when a new one only had 3.0 ohms. Because of the faulty MAP sensor, I couldn't check for the vacuum leak properly. So I hope this helps anyone out there who may have the same problem I had. My car is working GREAT now, even better than before. Thanks again.

I would say that is EXACTLY what it is! you've already "tested" it.
you could try cleaning it out. carb and choke cleaner works good

check everything you can under the hood your air intake system all of it especially make sure all clamps are tight .. and make sure all vacuum hoses are good and not cracking or broken or just loose . you might run a little fuel cleaner through a tank of gas too cleaning the engine fuel system up some. just a few ideas.. SOURCE: 1999 Escort ZX2 idling rough & not shifting in to overdrive

This could be caused by several things. Bad MAF sensor, TPS could be defective. You need to have the vehicle scanned for codes. You can have this done for no charge at AutoZone.

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE IAC (IDLE AIR CONTROL) MOTOR IS BAD OR GOING BAD, BUT THE QUICK SOLUTION IS GO TO ANY AUTO ZONE,OR ADVANCE AUTO PARTS STORE, AND THEY WILL CHECK IT FOR FREE,& TELL YOU WHAT SIGNAL CODE MADE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON, I WOULD DO THAT JUST TO BE FOR SURE, BECAUSE THERE ARE A FEW OTHER THINGS THAT CAN CAUSE IT AS WELL,SUCH AS MAF SENSOR DIRTY,OXY SENSOR GETTING A BAD READING,ETC.
