I have a 99 Cadillac D'Elegance, that just started overheating. It didn't lose anti freeze/coolant until after it overheated. I turned the heat up to the highest temp. and it blew out cool

I put a thermostat on it, and a serpentine belt. But if I'm driving the highway, it'll overheat. If I'm in the city, it won't. Could that be the waterpump though. But I'm not losing any coolant anywhere.

Water level was low thats why it blew cold ,you may have a slight leak somewhere but once the level drops below a critical amount then it will overheat so ask a local mechanic to have a good look for you as this sort of problem is often beyond the scope of a owner to locate the leak ,when running check the difference between the top and bottom rad hoses as well if bottom hose cold then it could be the thermostat .

possible ,the impeller is plastic and the drive shaft is metal and they can seperate so the impeller isnt turning as it should ,i would have expected it to the other way around though with it overheating in the city but w2ho knows with taking it apart and having a look at the impeller .

maybe 3 things....leaking intake manifold gasket(very common on this car because pontiac used plastic manifold gaskets) may also be air in the system....bleed screw is located on the top hose and is painted blue. it may have some air cavitation. you may have a leaky or bad seal on overflow cap. check your oil dip stick...if there is a milk shake type foam look to it then the gaskets are ready to fail. get a compression test done and it will confirm everything the easy way. harbor freight sells a radiator pressure test kit and it works like a champ and its cheap....good luck

Check for coolant flow at the Purge line, this is a common problem on the Northstar.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.

There are two freeze out plugs at the rear of the block (V8) and many v6 engines. If coolant is coming from where you say, likely they have failed. Unfortunately, the only way to reach them is to remove engine or transmission, It's rare that they fail because they are "protected " by the bellhousing, but can still rot from the inside out. There is no sealer known to man that will fix this. It's a shame that you need to do all that work for a pair of $2.00 plugs, but that's what needs to happen.

SOURCE: 2003 Protege 5 overheating on long runs.

I just replaced the radiator and thermostat on my 03. The radiator was defective (corroded) on the lip where the cap seals. This allowed coolant to be spat out. The thermostat was also sticking closed after new radiator and this caused overheating. Replace both while in there for under $100 if doing it yourself.

99 civic overhetaing problem

You'll need to do some detective work on the overheating issue.
Is the thermostat opening at 195 degrees ?
Is the system full of coolant and no air pockets?
Does the cooling fan come on when the engine reaches 225 degrees ?

Coolant leaking from above front suspension

If it's from the front of the engine, the water pump may have failed. Check for water coming out from the bottom of the pump.
Was the overheating caused by low coolant level?
If not the pump, check your engine freeze plugs and hoses.

My son's car overheated. Went to get some anti

The overheating is caused by the sludge. It is very easy to correct this problem. Remove the radiator cap and open the drain valve at the bottom of radiator. If possible, remove the reservoir and flush out with water. Make sure to get all sludge out of reservoir, then reinstall. Once the radiator stops draining, insert water hose (without nozzle) and turn water on. Keep the drain valve open. Run water through radiator until it runs clear. Once it runs clear, start the engine and let it run while keeping the water running through radiator. Allow engine to run until the thermostat opens up. Continue running water through radiator with engine running until the water from drain runs clear. Once you have done that, turn off the engine. Close the drain valve and refill radiator with proper mixture of coolant and water. Once radiator is filled, start engine and let circulate through engine. Coolant level will drop as the coolant starts circulating. Shut off engine and top off radiator. Fill the reservoir with the required amount of coolant. Testing the coolant at least once a year will help prevent this from happening again. Coolant should be replace a minimum of five years, less if coolant bottle specifies.

I have a 99 Cadillac Deville which is overheating and I think it is the thermostat. Can I do this myself? Is it easy to get at? I do have some mechanical skills.

you need to make sure the fans are turning on to cool the engine down first, the fans won't kick on until the coolant reaches 212 degrees ,make sure your not losing coolant ant radiator is full, check it when the engine is cold, the north star engines have a flaw in the head gaskets leaking,

I have a 1991 deville, and it just started overheating about 1 month ago. I put anti freeze in it and when its driven alot or long miles, then it runs hot and the antifreeze is gone.

If the engine fan works and you get good heat from the heater then you could have a bad head gasket. First make sure you dont have a leak somewhere and the car is overheating from low coolant level.
