I have an automatic 4x4 it drives fine but will not reverse. Is this a gearbox problem ar something minor?

Possibly the clutches in the automatic transmission are bad. It might need a rebuild.

Check if the you have an automatic gearbox for a steel and/or rubber pipe attached to the gearbox via a little vacuum unit. If this exists this pipe is connected to the inlet manifold, and supplies vacuum for the gearbox to select top gear in an automatic gear box. If this rubber and/or steel pipe is damaged or fallen off, repair or replace as necessary and then try again. If the vehicle has a manual gearbox, check the selector lever's, arms and or connectors. These can be rubbing on the vacuum pipes and may have split one of them.

Assembling fault. Check the linkages adjustment.

check tip stick if black and smell it it it smells burnt most likey transmission problem acheck that you trans. cable shifter cable is attached first

It sounds to me like a minor Issue rather than a major one try changing the Transmission Oil and if its got one also the Panel filter that is located in the bottom of the gearbox once the sump cover has been taken off depending on what Vehicle it is. Hope this helps

did you change your clutch when you changed your gearbox??? also check the clutch master cylinder.

DID YOU GET THE BANDS ADJUSTED ON THE REPACEMENT BOX?BECAUSE IT SOUNDS ABIT LIKE IT ISNT THAT MUCH BETTER THAN THE OLD ONE POSSIBLEY A BAND ADJUSTMENT MAY HELP

I think your gearbox is worn on the initial sprockets. major repair looking into the gearbox mech.

• sounds like you might have a bad transfer case solenoid which is activated when you hit the 4x4 button to engage the 4 wheel drive. I had the same trouble turned out to be that only takes about 1/2 hour or less to change. It is located under driver side just behind trans looks like a small round cylinder with about 3 wires, you may have to cut and splice them back but be sure to put color to color and either tape them with electrical tape or solder them and then tape them.
