Start at the throttle linkage and disconnect there follow routing of old cable and place new one in same was old cable and finish at the transmission, suggest a chilton or hayes repair manual with diagrams and step directions, and helps with future repairs, auto stores around $30

SOURCE: 98 Ford Explorer won't move in reverse

Sometimes it may just be the fluid level, if you have drive , drive it around the block a few times, then park it on level ground and hold the brake and go through all the gears slowley, two times. put it in park, open the hood and check the fluid level, the dip stick in the back by the fire wall, take it out and clean it, read the stick. SOME need to be checked in Nutral, if this is the case do so but be carefull that the truck has stopped moving when put in nutral!!! if it is low only put in the right fluid, and a little at a time, while it is still running DO NOT OVER FILL !!!!!!!! Also sometimes it is a SENSOR problem, and in most cases not to hard or costly to replace.

I have an Automatic 1994 Ford Explorer and the gear slector will not change out of park. This has happened before and I got it to move by jiggling the steering wheel and the gear selector. That isn't

the 1997 explore wont come out of park sometimes until you put your foot on the brake

FOOT ON THE BRAKE THE MOVE GEAR

its a safety feature in case your on a hill & for children if left in the car / wagon 4x4 it wont roll away on you

very smart really .

that\'s a floor shift not Colum shift but still might be the same . it still gets me to this day THAT LOL good luck

I have a 1995 ford explorer, lately it seems as if the trans is pulling, but when the gas is lightly pressed it seems to shift correctly what do u think the problem could be.

First thing I would do is change trans fluid and filter if trans is acting out of the "norm". On cars, trans fluid and filter should be changed every 50k, on trucks and vehicles that do frequent towing, trans fluid should be done every 30k. (I'm assuming this is an automatic trans - you didn't mention)

My 1997 ford explorer 4wd flashes intermittenly and does not want to go out of 4 wheel drive

There could be many causes but based on your vehicle, I would start with the electric shift motor. It is not uncommon for the shift motor to fail or freeze up. Sometimes it just boils down to lack of use. The electric shift motor, mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case, moves the transfer case from 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW. It should be located on the driver's side of the transfer case. While parked with your transmission in neutral, have a friend watch the shift motor while you switch from 2WD to 4WD and back. The movement of the cam on the shift motor should be visible as well as audible. If no movement, in some cases it can be manually assisted by hand. Just a place to start.

1. When refilling, remove dipstick to provide adequate venting and allow oil to flow into crankcase.
2. With ENG at operating temperature, shift through all gears. Check fluid level in PARK and add fluid as needed.
3. Fill to no more than 1/4 to 9/16" below fill plug hole.
4. Fill no higher than 9.5 mm or 3/8" below fill plug.

Trans slips between 2nd and 3rd shift

MV could be the problem. Always work thru issue before buying ANY can of additive. Generally those things just mask the issue..not fix it. Change your fluid, and if that doesnt correct it,then take it in and have the tranny bands tightened. most shops do this relatively in expensively.
