I replaced the water pump on my 1997 740i without a manual & so can you! Go to e38.org for instructions with pictures. Read up & get prepared with the parts & tools that you will need. Not a very difficult job, but take your time to do it properly. Good luck!

SOURCE: how to replace a water pump on a 1995 bmw 318is

-Disconnect the negative battery cable.

-Drain the cooling system.

-Remove the distributor cap and rotor. Remove the rotor adapter, the dust shield and the distributor housing.

-Remove the fan. The fan must be held stationary with tool 11 5 030 or some sort of flat blade cut to fit over the hub and drilled to fit over 2 of the studs on the front of the pulley. Remove the fan coupling nut; left hand thread-turn clockwise to remove.

-Remove the belt and pulley.

-Remove the rubber guard and distributor and or upper timing belt cover.

-Compress the timing tensioner spring and clamp pin with the proper tool.


*Observe the installed position of the tensioner spring pin on the water pump housing for reinstallation purposes.*

-Remove the water hoses, remove the 3 water pump bolts and remove the pump.

I would suspect that you pulled a wire off when you were installing the water pump. Check to see if you have spark

Some BMW have a mechanical pump driven by the serpentine belt, and some have an totally electric powered pump.

Just buy one for the model you have.

Aerostar, gotta' be an old one. What year? They were made form 1986 to 1997. The newest it could be is 16 years old. So, the most likely possibilities with no more info than you've provided would be that the radiator could be clogged with calcium deposits; the fan clutch could be worn out.; the water pump could be bad.

How rusty was the coolant that came out when you replaced the thermostat? I've seen those 3.0 liter Fords with the water pump impeller blades worn completely off from pumping abrasive rusty coolant. Usually rusty coolant ends up meaning a bad head gasket which pumps air into the coolant and makes an air pocket under the thermostat and keeps it from opening because the air insulates the thermostat wax element. If the thermostat doesn't open because of air pockets, engine overheats.

4.0 liter engine not so common. Different problems, what do you have? Need more information to help you more.

How to replace/install a fuel pump on a 1997 BMW Z3?

  • Loosen and remove the bolts in a crisscross pattern from the center outward.
  • Insert a rag into the block opening and scrape off any remains of the old gasket.
WARNING When working on the coolant system (for example, replacing the water pump or thermostat), a certain amount of coolant will spill on the floor. The antifreeze in the coolant causes it to be very slippery. Always immediately wipe up any coolant that spills to reduce or eliminate the chance of injury.
  • When replacing a water pump, always follow the procedures recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Most often a coating of good waterproof sealer should be applied to a new gasket before it is placed into position on the water pump.
  • Coat the other side of the gasket with sealer, and position the pump against the engine block until it is properly seated.
  • Install the mounting bolts and tighten them evenly in a staggered sequence to the torque specifications with a torque wrench. Careless tightening could cause the pump housing to crack. Check the pump to make sure it rotates freely.
  • The water pumps on many late-model OHC engines are driven by the engine's timing belt. When replacing the water pump on these engines, always replace the timing belt.
  • Make sure all pulleys and gears are aligned according to specifications when installing the belt. NOTE THIS IS FOR A 1.9 4CYL

1997 Cevrolet Cavalier 2.4 liter engine leaks antifreeze
If it is the water pump it will have a rad hose attached to it. There is supposed to be a small hole in the bottom of the water pump. When it starts leaking, it's time to replace the pump. You can do it yourself. A few wrenches and a couple hours is all you need. If you are unsure pick up a Haynes manual for your car when you get the new pump.

Comparing bmw engine sizes
Hello There

The engine in an E30 325i is not the same as the E36 328i. the 325 has a 2.5 litre engine and the 328is has a 2.8 litre engine. They are from a diffrent era. The engine in the 328i Has the engine code M52 and conpletely redesigned.

2.2 liter the water pump is below the alternator not to bad to change

2.4 liter you will need a shop to do this and about 8 hours lab plus parts

Remove fan from water pump on a 1997 Ford F150 4.2 Liter
There is a special tool that is required to hold the fan clutch. Then the fan screws out of the clutch. The tool can be bought or rented at your friendly parts store like autozone, etc. It will look something like this:  http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Clutch-Water-Pulley-Holding/dp/B000RT924E
