Where can I get a cheap egr valve for a 93 Mercury Villager?

I am having rough idling problems with my 93 Mercury Villager. I have done the standard tune up. It was still rough so I cleaned the egr valve and it ran ok for about a week. I think I should buy a new one, but after pricing them, I found out the part is a bit pricey and hard to find. I don't want to spend a lot on the vehicle. Getting rid of it within a year. I have priced an egr valve of the same year on a Nissan Quest and found one that is cheaper than the Mercury Villager. I would like to know if it will work.

What will work temporarily, is to remove the vacuum lines and hook them together, stopping the vacuum leak in the EGR because you've bypassed it. That will work till you can find a new one, or good used one and get it changed. Now you can say "why didn't I think of that". Seriously, friend, it's just Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. it won't hurt anything to bypass it for a little while.

Check the timing, PCV, fuel filter, clean out the throttle body, air intake, and check the Exhaust gas recirculation system. Valve and all.

SOURCE: 1998 Mercury mystique v6 "fuel filler downpipe"

Fuel Tank Filler Pipe
The fuel tank filler pipe is of steel construction and is retained to the vehicle by means of two lower retaining bolts and one upper retaining bolt. The fuel tank filler pipe is fitted with a twist-fit filler cap, which seals the system.

I would not replace it unless there was a reason.

Check EBay or tascaford.com if you really want to replace it.

You need to replace your distributor. There has been many problems with these. I had the same problem with my 1993 villager and had tried many different things and none worked. I went to a junk yard and got a used distributor and now it runs fine. I would try this before anything alse.

Running rough& stalling

Brenda, this could be a lot of different things to cause hard start and stalling. Faulty crank sensor, idle air control valve, EGR, vacuum leak, injectors, fuel pump, ignition circuit, distributor faulty, plugs, wires, plugged exhaust, etc. Find a good technician check the codes and have them diagnose and give an estimate on repair. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

EGR problem

Your EGR is likely leaking at idle, this causes your symptoms, replace it.

My 2002 Mercury Mountaineer idles rough, I changed pugs, coil and also took it to 2 different mechanics. Recently the code came on for P1400 . . .Im just wondering can this be the cause of the rough idle?

Hi, if your EGR valve is stuck open, it could cause a rough idle. P1400 indicates there is a problem with the EGR flowmeter. This may be the result of a valve that is stuck open or may be the cause or may be unrelated. What I recommend is to first check the vacuum hoses on the sensor/flowmeter and also check the hoses from the EGR solenoid to the EGR valve and from the intake manifold to the solenoid. If those are good, remove the EGR valve and inspect the EGR passages for blockage. Also check the valve for properoperation. The valve should default closed and open when engine vacuum is applied to the vacuum port. If you cannot find anything wrong, with the valve or passages, test the control solenoid that supplies vacuum to the EGR valve. It should click open when you apply 12 volts to it. If all this is good, check the wiring from the flowmeter to the computer for continuity. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

2000 mercury 4.6 runs rough but idles smooth had fuel injection service but it was cheap and it ran better for one day then started running rough when you are driving.

If you have 1-2 hours to fiddle with it here is what you can try. It worked on my 1994 and 2002 "4.6" engines.
The airhorn is behind all of the airfilter ductwork. There are about 8 bolts to remove to take off the airhorn. At the base of the manifold there is a gasket and venting to the EGR. Clean out the grooves and passages to the EGR. Check the EGR valve for carbon buildup. Replace the $10 gasket and reassemble. This should help and if it doesn't it cost $10 and a mechanic can't tell you the EGR is dirty.
