Re: bad smell coming from vents in my 2002 silhouette
Check with your dealer or local autoparts store to see if there is a cabin air filter that needs to be replaced. Have the AC freon level checked, if it is too high or too low a foul smell can be present when you 1st turn on the AC but should clear shortly. I have had some luck with this possibilty, start your vehicle, run the heat/AC (wherever the smell is) on high with windows open, and spray Febreeze into the cabin air intake. (the vents between the front window and hood) make sure your circulation is set to fresh if you try this option.

I would guess so because there should not be an odor coming from your vents and if it is worse when the heat is on there's a chance something literally crawled up there and died! I always wanted to say that not referring to peoples butts. lol But all kidding aside. You would be surprised at the little critters that can find there way into your venting system. Or just organic material that has gotten in there somehow and decayed. Best of luck tracking down those oderiferous emanations.
could be an a/c leak, could be mold in the vents.....there are vent cleaning kits you can get at most auto parts stores....they consist of a spray that kills mold, however you do not want to use them if you dont know how to take the ductwork out of the dash as it may leak and destroy electrical components in the dash.
Under the cowl on the passenger side (where
the hood and windshield meet) there may either be a cabin air filter or just a mesh screen. If it has a filter, then replace it as that's probably the cause. If it's a mesh screen, then most likely it's allowed stuff into the vent and has caused the drain on the vent to clog and is most likely the cause of the smell. I'm not sure where the actual drain will be on your car. You could also install a filter in place of the mesh screen as well.
Do you leave your climate control in the Auto position. This is bad. What happens is the evaporator which is located in the vents never dries out and you begin to grow mold. Does it smell musty, locker room type smell.
Also since it came out the heat vent it could also be a leaking heater core. Check you coolant level and reservior. If low this is an indication heater core is leaking. It may not of leaked enough to tell but usually these are the only reason the vents would smell unless a rodent ended up there and died.
