Hello! The Top Dead Center Sensor is the most likely culprit...However, it is not sold as a separate item and is part of the distributor...The cost of which is $350...I would suggest having the vehicle hooked up to a diagnostic machine to be certain...A diagnostic check should be under a $100...See distributor picture below...

You will need a qualified mechanic to look at this engine. If your timing belt snapped there is a very good chance the engine is junk. The only real way to find out is to take the cylinder head off. That way you can check the piston crowns and valves for damage. The fuel blowing back through the throttle can be caused by a valve issue from the belt breaking.

Pops, while pushing the gas pedal, and back fires and smells like gas and shakes while pressing the gaspedal, on 91 jeep cherokee l 4.0
spark timing way off. or burned valves.
i dont think a 4L can change cam timing. (gears)
that is gross misfire,
so bad it backfires to the throttle body and air cleaner
in all cases is bad spark timing, or worse burned valves.
bad rotor & cap,?
doing a tune up get rid of that carbon tracked bad cap.
and timing magically works.
ever do a full tune up this decade or in last 60,ooo miles>

When i give it full throttle it backfires through the throttlebody? already replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor, idle air valve. cant find crank positioning sensor to set timing.

When you state you have a "Cap & Rotor", indicating an engine, which may possibly be OLDER than the 1994 S-10 it is in. A Crank positioning sensor, on a full throttle body, (or do you mean carburetor/combo/injector system) Not the true name, but, in appearance, looks like a carb. It has a "pulsating" injector within the opening of the butterfly/mouth of the throttling body. When you have an ECM, or Computer Command timing, with a crank sensor, you will have 2 coil packs for 4 cylinder, a 3 coil pack for a V-6. They will be just under the electric cooling fan for the radiator. If you are driving a "bought used" vehicle, and the Cap, Rotor, & wires are only accessed thru the RH wheel well, it is a "Distributor System" & an OLDER engine. The Back fire is being caused by a "jumped" timing belt, or HOPEFULLY, a crossed spark plug wire.

The reason I'm checking the timing belt is that there is mis-fire in 1 & 2 cylinder. If the firing order is 1,2,3,4. I have continues fire out of 1 & 2, when plug wires are pulled out of head. 3...

unplug the fuel injectors, check the olhms on all. the readings should all be the same, around 11-11.5 olhms. Any readings that are higher is a sign of a bad injector which is what your problems sounds like., putting to much fuel to a cylinder causing different fuel amounts to each cylinder and causing it to backfire out of the throttle body , excess fuel . Also remove the throttle body and clean with cleaner and a toothbrush after replacing any injectors. Or there's a simpler answer and that the cambshaft is worn-out/round causing the lifters not to open enough to let in all the fuel. A worn belt would not cause misfires only on select cylinders but rather jump timing, slipping a notch on a gear and possibly bending a valve or valves and this cause a loud clacking or a really a sign to quit running the motor because it's broke! Good luck.

remove your valve cover and have someone try to crank it over while you watch the camshaft to see if it turns, your timing belt may have jumped a tooth ( causes bad running and back fire ) and then broke
