That would be a question to ask an engine rebuilder in your area. Parts costs and labor rates vary WAY too much for anyone to answer that question over the world-wide web!

I have a 98 neon that needs o2 sensor and egr valve fixed. Ive been quoted 340 repair bills for the work. Is that reasonable, or better to put 700 down start payments on a new car?

Carlos, Can you do any work your self new EGR valve $50.00, new O2 sensor $50.0 or less ordered through Rock auto.com, if car overall in good shape may be worth fixing. Especially if finances are tight. get a second even third estimate and this time ask them if you supply new parts O2 and EGR how much they want for labor, should not be more then 1.5 hours. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Blowing oil out of rear mane

hi do you know for sure its the rear main and not another leak, maybe higher up? on alot of these cares nowadays you can have cam sensor seals leaking causing the same apperance as a rear main seal leak. My sugestion is to clean off your engine and find a part store that sells engine oil die. and poor it in your engine fill tube, With a florecent lamp you can actually follow the die up the engine to its highest point of leakege. This is were the problem is that needs attension. Know if its still a rear main seal. Then when you install it you must take exstreme precautions not to roll the lipe seal-use a small flat piece of plastic to help guide the lipe around the end of the crank shaft, then add red locktite to the outer edge of the seal. you must fing a installer that fits the circumfrance of the seals outer edge but not contacting the rear cover. hint exaust adapters from parts stores work really well. use a 2bye4 cutt off over the end of the adapter and drive it in straight do not let it get unlevel or it will not seal. Let it dry for at least an hour before you putt your fly wheel on. I also want you to check the positive crank case ventilation system. PCV valve clogged restricted air inlet tube usually bye air filter running to valve cover. with the engine runninigat idle you should feel a suction on your thumb at this tube. if notthe system is clogged and you will need to remove valve cover and clean off or above the splash shiel made to the upper part of the valve cover.this system keeps the engines internal pressures from getting to high witch causes premature seal damage and gasket failure. Hope this helps from Joe.

Leaking valve seals. I want to know the cost to replace versus trading in the vehicle. The vehicle has 176000 miles and is in perfect condition. In fact, the original brakes still have 2/3 of the pads...

Hello
The valve stem seals can be replaced without removing the cylinder head(s) using special tools, so the cost would be be around $600.00 for the V6 engine and about $350.00 for the 4 cylinder engine. Since you don't mention which engine you have I provided both estimates. Keep in mind the parts to do this are the least amount of the cost (about $30), the major cost is labor, labor rates vary wildly from state to state even city to city, so get multiple estimates, Any well trained technican and well equipped repair shop can do this basic repair. If the new seals don't correct the problem which I assume is smoke then the engine has other much more expensive problems like worn piston rings and worn valve stem guides.

There is blue smoke coming from the tail pipe. I spoke to someone about it and they said its oil in the combustion chamber. If this is the problem, how much would something like that cost to fix?

Hi there,

This advice you received is correct.

Blue smoke emmitted from the tailpipe signifies the engine is burning oil.

Possibilities are:

  • BAD RINGS - and engine with bad rings will not only burn oil, there will also be a significant loss in power, especially noticeable when driving up hill.
  • BAD VALVE STEM SEALS - with this condition, blue smoke mainly appears during acceleration.
  • Turbocharger - if your engine is fitted with a turbocharger, the seals on the turbo could be leaking.
In regards to the Bad rings and Bad valve stem seals, this may require some serious money, unless your vehicle is covered by a warranty.

For Bad rings, you will need to have a "wet compression test" done on your engine to determine if the rings are bad. Having these replaced will be expensive and in some cases, a replacement engine (with a warranty) may be an alternative option (or sell your vehicle and put your money towards another vehicle).

For Valve stem seals, I suggest only having the stem seals replaced (nothing else - don't let them talk you into any major work) to see if this cures the problem first. If blue smoke is still emitted from the exhaust, then you may be up for a major valve job, in which case you should again consider a replacement engine (with a warranty) or selling your vehicle.

Hope this helps...

V.w.jetta gas eng. timing belt broke ? .shut engine off then wood not start . dealer says needs head work ? bent valves? without disasembling is it possible valves never came into contact with pistons ?

Hi, im afraid i can only give you bad news im afraid, if the engine was running even on tick over when the belt snapped then this would have caused the valves to smash into the pistons as the top half of engine would have stopped spinning leaving at least 2 valves in the out position but what causes the damage is the bottom half of the engine, as their is no weight on the cams to keep them turning they stop at once but the bottom half the crank has a big weight called the fly wheel now when the belt snapped the cams would have stopped dead but the crank would have carried on turning under its own weight and this is what causes the piston or pistons to hit the valves this then causes the valves to bend and all the valves will need replacing and the whole top end rebuilding with new seals and the new valves and valve seats will need grinding in.

how ever as its only usually the top half that gets damaged you could save yourself some time and money by calling a local breakers yard and see if they have a cylinder head lying around or even a whole engine as the cost of rebuilding you head and engine would cost more than it would to get a second hand cylinder head or if you didnt want to take any chances look into getting a whole engine.

look at the costs involved get a quote off you garage for the head rebuilt and new valves, tell them worse case if it needed complete head rebuild with all new valves and valve seats and all the seals get a price on the whole job then ask them how much it would cost if you supplied a working cylinder head or even whole engine then compare the prices and check with some breakers for cylinder head prices or engine and you should find that a second hand head will work out cheaper than having yours stripped and rebuilt with new parts.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

please rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

I CURRENTLY HAVE A 1993 TOYOTA SR5 LIMITED THAT HAS A CRACKED HEAD. ITS AUTO BUT I HAVE A 1992 MODEL OF THE SAME CAR THAT HAS A MANAUL BOX AND AN ENGINE THAT ONLY NEEDS THE REAR SEAL. IVE BEEN OFFERED...

The cost of pulling the old head and having it repaired(to include parts/timing belt, head set, head repair and valve adjustment less than $500)would be most economical and most reliable. Let me know if you need instructions or anything else.
