Losing power at highway speeds - especially if I downshift. Acts like its starved for fuel. Replaced cat. coverter and fuel filter. Had codes checked etc. Can't locate problem!

What is causing power loss?

Yes, the fuel pressure was checked by a mechanic and it was ok and all codes were within specs.

    what engine do you have

  • Anonymous May 30, 2012

This site did not help me but I did get the problem fixed. It turned out to be the fuel pump. Only detectable under stress. $500.00 later. The fuel pump only failed under stress. They had to crimp the line while on the computer to diagnose. Thanks anyway. I hope that this helps someone else. Contrary to popular opinion, the fuel pump can go out gradually.

Reason I asked if you checked fuel pressure is because it does vary from load to just ideling if it is going bad..... and you right away told me you had a mechanic check it, so I figured your mechaanic would of checked it under a load going down the road, sorry about your $500. bill , Have a Good day !

I had a problem with the brakes on my 2005 GMC that significantly increased the fuel consumption. The calipers for the disk brakes were not moving freely and were causing the brake pad on one side to always contact the rotor. This problem is easily found by checking for heated brakes after a short drive or by coasting to a stop to see if the truck rolls easily without power.

i would try a fuel filter first. the fuel gauge going crazy is most likely the sender they go bad and eventually stop working. the bummer is you have to replace the fuel module. these aftermarket are about 200 bucks. the module comes with the pump and sender which is the next part you want to look at. gm has some issues with the harness to the fuel pump externaly. it actualy will melt and start to lose conection. i would check this by visualy inspecting the plug on top of the tank. unplug it and take a look. if it is at all disscolored replace the pump (module). the new pump comes with a replacement harness (make sure its in the box)hope this helps and good luck

Check your fusible links; these are small wires molded into the middle of a bigger wire they are usually located up by the battery cables. When they burn they become discolored and softly flexible. Also check your relays too.

While driving vehicle has a flat spot almost like its starving for fuel..... also noted today while driving vehicle started losing power , like it wanted to stall had to down gear twice .... continued...

Most possible that the fault is linked to a fuel strench. As mentioned it is important to check your fuel filter to confirm if there is block. Also the other area of suspicion can be the fuel tank as if there is water or impurities it can occassionally clog and make the engine hunt.
finally check on the electrics, check the spark intensity to confirm if there is any problem with the spark generation- suspect HT coils or the ignition system.

Lose of power on acceleration like its starving

Sounds like there is a load of dirty fuel in that gas tank. Ran good for a while after changing fuel filter, then began to run poorly again. Remove fuel tank, drain and clean out, replace fuel filter AGAIN. That should cure it. Hope this helps

1993 chevy s10 power loss

Hi. I would try changing the fuel filter. If its partially plugged up you could be starving for gas and that can make your emmission sensors give bad readings. Cant gurentee it, but it would be a place to start.

Downshift hesitation?

Sounds like a plugged catalytic converter or in rare cases muffler. This will set codes but try this; remove O2 sensor closest to front of catalytic converter, it will be noisy but drive again, if performance is better, suspect plugged catalytic converter, replace cat and reinstall O2. Also check air filter and mas air flow sensor. Have had some luck carefully cleaning sensor with throttle body/air intake cleaner after removing from vehicle with key off. Hope this helps !
