Question about 1998 Volkswagen Golf

I have a 98 golf Gl 2.0liter. It idles rough, constantly hunting, missfiring, and stalling. I have replaced cap rotor wires plugs, and timing belt. would like vacuum schematics. Especially a white air line that runs in behind the windshield washer fluid reservoir. Thought it may be a sensor too. Help

I know this is more of a band-aid than an actual fix, but when you fill up your gas tank try putting some Iso-Heat in with it. This seems to help when mine idles rough.

Hi!
So far you have done all but change the leads! This will help dramatically BUT if your head gasket is blown I'm afraid you'll have real difficulty in get it to run smooth as water/steam is possibly mixing with the fuel causing very poor ignition.
I did the same as you on a Golf as soon as the new leads were fitted Bingo a New Car, However there wasn't a head gasket issue.

Converter/exhaust may be plugged up. Pull it off and drive the car.
A compression or leakdown test will tell you if ya have internal engine problems. Do it before and after removing the converter.

Rough idle 1990
I inherited a 1990 Charade when Dad died in 2001.
Did you try a simple tune-up? Plugs, Distributor Cap, Plug Wires, Rotor Bug..?
Worse case scenario Timing Belt slipped a notch..

Hi, my1997 dakota with a 3.9 engine has a rough idle, has plenty of power i replaced plugs, wires, cap,pcv, rotor and added fuel cleaner. its a little better but still has a rough idle
My uncle worked at a dodge dealership as a head mechanic for over 30 years and he also found all of the 3.9 liter engines to have the rough idle. The rough idle cannot be explained but it can be made worse by buildup on the engine. I have a 2001 Dakota sport with the 3.9 and mine does it too and one of the first times i drove it it stalled and its not a Manuel transmission. But onc I changed the oil and put Lucas oil additive as well as regular additives to my gas every month or so it has reduced greatly and not stalled since. Hopefully you find this helpful.

REPLACE DISTRIBUTOR CAP AND ROTOR REPLACE SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES IF NOT BEEN CHANGED IN LONG PERIOD OF TIME.CHECK IGNITION TIMING.CHANGE AIR FILTER CLEAN FUEL INJECTORS.IF ENGINE STILL MISFIRE IGNITION COIL IS WEAK OR YOU HAVE LOW CYLINDER COMPRESSION.

I fixed my transmission and its still missfiring, what can it be
Tranmissions don't misfire - they are just a bunch of gears.
You're engine can be misfiring - replace the spark plugs, plug wires, and cap and rotor.

I've got an 2003 blazer 4wd with a 4.3L. It idles rough once above idle its fine. Its not missfiring. The distributor, cap, rotor button, plugs, wires and crank sensor have all been replaced. Everything...
I would recommend having a fuel injector balance test performed as these injectors have a common problem with plugging up. Off idle the other injectors may be compensating for this fuel deprivation.
The air/fuel ration can also be reviewed with a scan tool. Good luck.
