89 corscia 2.8. starts and when you put it in gear it cuts off. you can start back up and drive and when you stop it cuts off again. what causes it to cut off?

The car has 28,800 miles on it, yes that is the correct miles for the 1989 corscia, its the 2.8l automatic. it does not run hot, it will idle and when you put it in gear it cuts off. i crank the car back up and take off, when i slow down it starts to act like it wants to stall then it dont til i stop at a stop sign or redlight, then i will start it back up and go again, i dont understand why it keeps cutting off but will idle. please help. thank

It's your TCC solenoid. If staring at the engine from the front bumper, it's connector is located right side nearest the front bumper right below the air filter case, unplug it and done. If the solenoid is failed then once the vehicle is warmed up it will shut down and run rough till it's cooled down. I know because of my 89 2.8l v6 Corsica had the same issue and unplugged it myself at 119,000 and still driving 3 years later with 130,000. Very few people realize this solenoid is there and mechanics over look it every time.

sounds like the lockup converter is not releasing when you stop, like stopping with a stick shift and not pushing in the clutch. lockup solenoid most likely. Could just disconnect the lockup sol. (won't lock up at all) or replace the solenoid.

if the nuetral safety was a problem the car would not start at all, sounds like you have a defective engine wiring harness, this is the most common cause of this i have seen while working for Ford.

Sounds like a possible clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump. The system provides and initial extra pressure to pressurize the system then pump pressure drops to normal. If pressure is low or filter clogged decreasing available volume the symptoms you describe are the result.

there is an ignition module located rite beside the distributor cap on the distributor base these are well known for getting weak and heating up thus causing your engine to stall.
