I have a 2005 Altima 2.5S.(42k miles) I've had the car for 2 years and not had any problems. However for the last 2 days, its not starting properly on the first try. In some cases I have to let the car sit for 40 minutes before getting it to start up. The battery is brand new. The engine cranks over without any hesitation.
I've tried starting holding the peddle down 2/3 down (as suggested on some forums) - no luck
I've removed the battery terminal (in hopes it resets something) - no luck.
I connected an ODB II scanner and I get "Camshaft Sensor - Malfunction on Circuit 1" (Cen-Tech error code P0340)
I see there is a recall to reprogram the ECM - would this fix the problem. Or should I change the sensor?

I think replacing the sensor is in order. i know all car makes have "recalibration updates" for the ecm and should be done, but have rarely fixed vehicles on just that alone. and your symptoms suggest the sensor could be intermittently bad
Camshaft positioning sensor is not hard to get to all all. It's right next to the upper thermostat housing and will take 5mins. The crankshaft positioning sensor is the bear to get too.
My 05 Nissan doing same thing we have replaced cam sensor, crank sensor, fuel pump...still having starting problems I am at a lose and ready to give up
My 06 did the same thing and everybody said it was the cam sensor.....had it replaced and didn't fix anything. mine always starts on the second try after it is hot. when it's cold it starts every time with no issues. Our Nissan dealership is full of mechanic morons who shouldn't be working on bicycles let alone cars. also took it in when it started running bad and the temp gauge would drop at the same time it ran bad and they couldn't figure it out. fixed it myself by replacing the temp sensor unit ($20). apparently I'm a Nissan mechanic and didn't know it.

This is definitely a camshaft sensor malfunction, you can get away with not replacing it for awhile but eventually when it goes the car will stop starting, the sensor will need to be replaced hence why your car isn't starting but intermittently. Its easy to do and will take about 30 minutes to do, its just a pain to get to.

I have a 2005 Nissan Altima 2.5 with 45K miles and had the same problem, would not start. It was turning over, so it was not the battery and it sounded like it was not getting fuel. I let it sit for a couple of hours and after approx 8 cranks it finally started and sounded like a lawn mower engine that had been flooded. This happened about a month ago but has not happened since, it has started every time.
