'99 3.3 grand caravan. cut off while driving,chk engine came on.scanned,cam shaft sensor replaced,mpg increased. yea!. Then 145 mi. trip,got in to return...turned over but wouldn't start. ck b

1. is there gas in the tank?
2.is the pump getting power? SEE #4
3.why did you replace the pump? 4.some dodges need a scan tool to run the fuel pump to get the fuel system primed after replacing the pump. If the computer senses the engine isnt running after a few seconds it shuts the fuel system down. Happened on my friends jeep that was a chrysler system. Took a while to figure it out. The snap on red brick scan tool worked for this. Any scan tool(not just a code reader) that can get to functional tests of the engine computer will work.
Sounds like no fuel is getting past the pump,so get a scan tool capable of doing this,take hose off of fuel filter stick the end of the hose in something to catch the fuel that will come out and activate the pump. If fuel comes out the pump is working and the filter is clogged, if pump sounds like it is runnin and no fuel comming out pump is bad.If all is quiet pump isnt getting power.

There is not fuse for pump but a relay in the relay block. I do suggest jumping to see if pump turns on. Test voltage from ECM if needed. If voltage is to pump, then pump is shot. If not voltage, relay may be bad

Do a compression check, if you have lost compression on 2 or more cylinders try replacing the timing belt. If the compression is good across all cylinders and you have an alarm installed by pass the alarm by removing the in line fuse from the power line or cutting the power wire for the alarm.

o.k. lets see the throttle position sensor on the throttle body may be worn at that point of travel because you always drive at that speed so the sensor contacts inside may be worn at that particular space and it will not set a code because it is still making partial contact/ extremely dirty throttle body from cheap gas/ crank /cam shaft sensors but I don't think so one thing you can do which will help the truck no matter what is to clean all electrical contacts inside and out this truck is now 16 years old and dried up lithium grease and oxidation corrosion can be cutting down electrical current transfer through the connectors the engine is computer controlled and works from sensors sending electrical voltage in pulse's and values back to the e c m(computer) to help it adjust for multiple driving conditions using carbon conductive grease will bring your contacts back to 100% current transfer and improve running condition and mpg's this is the most overlooked part of a vehicle and is sometimes responsible for component failure symptoms when the unit is still good

Yea , testing before replacing parts . You suspect a fuel pump ,test the electrical circuit , do a fuel pressure an flow test . Have a professional scanner hooked up by a qualified diagnostic technician . Not auto zone or advance auto parts .

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems ca cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms

Engine light came on...reading states its my cam shaft sensor, but dealer states 1997 grand cherokees 6 cyl. dont have a cam shaft sensor...What can it be then? if reading staes its a cam shaft?

Your cam sensor is inside the distributor. Problem is they list it as a Stator, not a sensor. on newer models, the sensor replaces the entire distributor. To remove it, you need to take the distributor out of the engine and remove the center shaft etc.

cam sensor data is used by the computer to optimize timing of injector solenoid firing. Bad sensor may cause engine to miss or experienced reduced fuel mileage. I got about 2-3 mpg better mileage after replacing a bad sensor.

Rpm guage cuts out and car quits but starts right away all the time

Best thing to do is go to Auto Zone and have the care scanned for any DTC codes. Auto Zone scan free of charge and that way we might get to the problem right away. It could be your cam sensor or crank shaft sensor or both that may have gone bad. There are just to many sensors that can shut down the engine and getting the car scanned will eliminate replacing good parts. Good luck and keep me posted.

Blinking Check Engine light

This is typically a sign of a "detrimental misfire". A blinking check engine light means DON'T DRIVE ME! You may want to have your coil pack checked, plugs replaced or gapped properly, or wires replaced. Would also have to do with the camshaft sensor causing your timing to be off.

1998 dodge caravan crank shaft or cam shaft sensor??

maybe have autozone or equal scan the computer for codes. could be a misfire in the cyl. somewhere. give me a code number and i will try to assist you further.
