2002 Windstar also with charging issues. Replaced battery and alternator, dash light still on and 11.8 volts measured at battery (no charge). Replaced alternator again and system was fine for 600 miles. Again battery light came on with less than 12.5 volts measured at battery. Shut off and restarted car, light went out, charging at 14 volts. Now comes on about every 50 miles and will resume charging after a shut down and restart. Seems like something other than alternator?

I just replaced the alternator in my 2003 mustang, with a 150amp alternator. The new connection i had to purchase was not the same, it came with three wires instead of two. What do i connect the black and white wire to, and will this make the battery lite go off. Please help i getting frustrated! Thanks kevin.

Hi, I can't tell you exactly what is wrong because there is too much involved at this point, what with 2 shops working with it, but I can give you some advise on what else to check. On the alternators and the wiring that supports them a small volt charge is taken off one of the slip rings, where the brushes ride, for the purpose of turning out the light. As I remember, this is a yellow wire that runs back to the dash.

To the alternator, it would be one of the wires that plug into the side of the alternator case.

This sounds like an alternator problem. have the battery and charging system tested. this test will tell you if the battery is good and also if the alternator is good.

2003 Ford Windstar----I had battery light, abs and brake light intermittantly coming on. Found that alternator was over charging and there was a bad wire overheating going from battery and fuse panel. ...

Hello, It could be what you said. But if you know the Voltage was too high, you may want to replace the Ignition Relay and the Fuel pump Relay. If the contact points are cooked, they could work intermittently and it would be difficult to test. A bump or a little overheating could cause the contact points to break loose and then work when they cool.

It is good that the "check lights" are off. I always tell my clients that the scans are free at Autozone, Oreillys, and Advance. Some things like Relays may not trigger a light.

Be careful with a Wiggle test, but you may find a short in the wiring by shaking the wiring under the hood. I doubt the Voltage Regulator is causing your current stalling problem. A fully charged Battery without a Regulator or an Alternator would provide an amount of reliable power until the Battery was drawn down.

I hope my Solution is very helpful.

1998 windstar van: charging system light goes

It could mean the alternator has gone bad already... with the car off, the battery leads should read 11-12V.. with the car on, the battery should read 13-14V.. if it's lower then it's not charging your battery and if it's higher, it's damaging your battery....

I have a 99 windstar. I replaced battery and alternator. charging system checks out Good. 14V charging and good battery strength. Battery light still on. I have been driving in this condition for 3 days...

With the battery light on and at 14 volts I would suspect that the diode trio is going out and over charging the battery, first check that the battery has fluid in it all the way if it does then have it load tested at a battery shop like all state or sears or any parts store can do a load test for you. Just because it's putting out 14 volts does not mean it's putting out enough amperage, the light is giving you fair warning of an impending problem, have it checked at AutoZone or shucks it does not cost nothing and they can test the alternator output as well.

This morn a burning like smell came through the heater and the batt. light came on ,i opened hood and smell was coming from what seemed to be alternator

you probably had one of the diodes in the alternator burn out...go to auto parts store and have them test the charging system or use a multimeter if you have one, normal, engine running voltage should be around 14 volts, if below 12.6 the alt. is not charging and needs replacing. Enjoy
