Drove it with air-conditioner on, noticed the jeep starting to loose power. I turned off the air, some power returned. when i got to my destination, the engine was making what sounded like metal rubbing. definaltely coming from the front where the belts are.

I had the same problem at about the same mileage. Replaced the power steering pump and the start up screaming went away! ( The Jeep's and mine!)

I had a skim module go out in mine in the ignition, and I have a 2001. It's a 100 part, and now it starts fine.

See that? Every once in a while I'm right!!! Reason is that the starter draws far more than anything else in the car. Lights and radio can easily be run by an otherwise ineffective battery, but when loaded (starter draws a bit less than 200amps), the battery will fall flat on its' face! When you jump it, the car is running off the alternator and seems to be OK, till you turn it off again.

It sounds like your on the right track, the next step is to do a compression test to verify good rings in that particular cylinder.
