I started it up this morning (its rainy and this car has never performed well in the rain) kept idleing low like it wanted to turn off went to the gas station for air to the tires (unrelated) and when i started out I got stuck halfway between stalling and driving in first gear until I managed to punch the gas and get moving
If it's not idling a bit higher at start-up, the computer has not placed it in cold start mode. Meaning the temperature sending unit/sensor is malfunctioning. Until it warms up, you'll get no performance, rain or shine. Have this temp sensor checked for operation. It may even be just disconnected from the wire.

check all your relays with an ohmeter to make sure they all operate. A code would go off usually only if it is an electrical problem. If you are getting fuel and fire, and no codes it is most likely a relay. If you did have codes then I would say sensor. So check those relays

maybe try replaceing the ingnition modual. that part can do a lot of weird things to these cars. its located inside the distributor cap, really easy to do. about $40 and 10 mins or less. sometimes as they start to fail they do odd things sometimes but not always

Try this
Here are the most common causes of surges, stalls at stops, low erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

this is cause because the ISC is busted or can not open enough to keep idle at 800 rpm.
ISC , idle speed controller
but....
the car has a TPS switch on the throttle body.
if it fails to close at idle the ecu will never attempt to set idle.
or
car could be flooding. (too much gas)
you did not say if motor is 8valve or 16v and they are quite different EFI systems.
SOURCE: Geo metro 97. Runs great for a day then wont start the next
Your timing belt is worn out. Some days it runs good because the cogs are lined up. The next time you start it, it maybe backfires just a touch, and it's out of time. Today, it's really out. Or maybe even broken.
