Buster, check the transmission fluid level, if level OK it is something wrong internal of transmission, torque converter, pump, shaft splines stripped, etc. Take into a good shop for diagnosis and estimate to repair/replace.Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Very common on this make and model trans, pump drive splines inside torque converter strip out and pump is not turning, Most times there is no damage to pump shaft. Remove trans and remove torque converter, inspect the splines at the very bottom of the hub hole. If stripped out inspected pump shaft splines which are the smaller center splines coming out of trans, if ok replace torque converter and re-install trans, change out fluid, clean any metal from magnet and replace filter, fill with fluid and verify proper operation.
If the transmission is not shifting properly it's important to get to a repair shop as soon as possible. Go to a reputable transmission shop. If you can catch some of this stuff early you can avoid costly hard parts failure.
I had a small plastic piece replaced in the transmission and it solved the problem(2007). My car was still under warranty, so it only cost me about $100.00. The actual cost was closer to $900.00 because of the labor involved. I used the Ford Dealer in Schulenburg, Texas. They would know exactly what you are talking about, if you ask them.
Windstar tranny problem: just got off phone with Northway Transmission of Queensbury, NY Technician said the torque converter had destroyed itself. the pump drive spline in converter broke and took out fins in torque converter it's going to cost me nearly $1600.00 car has only 45000mi on it and I caught it rather quickly and DID NOT TOW had car moved by flatbed/ramp truck otherwise they would have had to completly tear down transmission. (over $2300.00)
No not at all, find a good transmission tech near you and have it checked out, it could only be a small fault but if not attended to it will need a $2000.00 repair
