HELP with my problem to my Question and added details

New bearings, fuel pump, catylitic converter, now new starter-had a new battery that sat connected for 5mths till 2 days ago put the new starter in and that sitting new battery wouldnt crank it over, not even by jumping it with cables from another car-took that 5mth old sittin battery back, and got a new one-if this new battery doesnt start car or crank over new starter, what do i do next? i have replaced so many key and major componets and car in great shape to not keep going til car is fixed! ran hot and low/no oil and spun bearings-replaced them, cple lifters, and starter end up being bad-put new starter in cause i tried the new battery 5mths ago and it still just clicked-but had to tow it out to a lot and it sat for 5mths until 2 days ago,put new starter in and it seemed not enough battery to crank it over-tried jumping yesterday and same thing-so took that battery back and now have new 1 to put in with the new starter in it now-if this does not start car,i dont know what else to do? its like the whole car has all new parts, and only has 98,000 miles with just basically having the whole bottom engine rebuilt, and all these new parts,i even think the alternator is only 2 yrs old-i need this car running and have sunk alot money into it to not keep trying to fix- HELP!!!!!

Not sure at what point the car wouldn't start, but sounds like after the lower end was rebuilt? If so, check the timing chain and verify it is in the correct position. You may have the timing off and it would turn very hard. Verify top dead center on #1 and verify the crank position. Also the cam position.

A good hot battery shoulde do it. Have you had any problems with the security system? That's all that should keep it from starting now. Have you put a socket on the crank bolt to make sure the engine is not seized and turns freely?
Good luck.

Your cat is plugged, its not letting your exhaust leave the engine thus causing all these problems. You need to get it changed as soon as possible. You can get a shop to put in a universal one they are usually very cheep but do it soon. They can get hot enough to start a fire as you have already seen.

SOURCE: possible bad alternator?

I went through three alternators before we found a good one for our saturn sl2. Now she has been good for two years. All I did was go back to where we bought it from, they hooked up the alternator to a machine and gave us a new one when it read that it was faulty.

SOURCE: 98 saturn sl1 won't start

If the problem occurs after the car has been driven long enough to reach normal operating temperature, the problem is the starter. If the 'no crank' occurs cold, retest the battery.

Why doesn't it crank or start?

Check battery connections and voltage. fuel pump only runs for a few seconds to start and runs again while cranking.

Will start but wont stay running

No the missing O2 sensors would not keep it from running. The missing exhaust pipes might not help matters. No exhaust system would cause a lack of back pressure.
I would want to know what base fuel pressure is with a gauge before and after cranking. Your thought about bad gas is legit, today's gasoline is only good for about 2 or 3 months before it starts gelling up.
Did you replace the inline filter the last time you put the new pump in ? And are you sure the pump is getting power after the key is released?

98 sunfire with starting problem, only has 89000 kms, changed battery, had starter checked, only seems to have a problem when car has sat for more than 3 hrs

This could indicate a weak fuel pump or clogged pump strainer. I would start by replacing the fuel filter since this should be done every two years. The fuel pressure bleeds off after some time so the pump has to try to build the pressure back up on a cold start. This is the cheapest and easiest fix to try first.

It's not likely to be your catylitic converter it's more likely your fuel pump is going bad or you have some damaged wiring to the fuel pump. If by chance you recently had it changed the ground probably didn't get connected right.

I need to replace the oil pan gasket on my 1997 Lincoln Continental, can this be done without removing the catylitic converter?

According the Here is a cut and paste from it....

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Drain the oil pan, then remove the oil filter. Position the drain pan out of the way.
  4. Remove the dual converter Y-pipe assembly.
  5. Remove the starter motor. For details, please refer to the procedure located earlier in this section.
  6. Remove the engine rear plate/converter housing cover.
  7. Remove the retaining bolts and remove the oil pan.

Catylitic converter vs fuel pump

If it is the converter you would hear a slight popping noise from the exhaust. Before punching holes I would disonnect exhaust before the converter and see if it runs any better.
