Speedometerspeedometer cluster for 1997 Buick Lasbre

Speedometer needle flops wildly back and forth as soon as I start the engine and before car is put into drive. Once car is in motion the needle is either all the way to the left or all the way to the right. while driving it will go to the right and left intermittantly. Never works properly. .

Could be a bad cable. If it is broken into, you'll get swings like this. If you are handy, you can replace it yourself. If not, most garages can do it for you.

SOURCE: 1995 Buick Park Ave. Brake light remains ON and chimes on driving

The problem is the car think the park brake is on (intermittently). I would check the park brake switch, perhaps it's loose, or perhaps the park brake is pushed down to the first "click" spot. Also check the wiring connection to the switch, and the wiring nearby. Good luck!

SOURCE: 1997 buick lesabre has intermitant speedometer/odometer

Sounds as if it may be an instrument cluster issue. Check the plug at the cluster, if it is ok then travel to your nearest GM dealer and ask them to see if there is a software update addressing your issue. They will likely charge you a diagnostic fee, but it will be cheaper than throwing parts at it in the long run.

SOURCE: Buick Regal 2001 LS dashboard lights flash off and on

It turned out the ground wire to the battery was loose, Evidently, it loosened up when driving so mimiced the earlier symptoms because it connection was sporadic. I hooked up to a computer to verify after connection tightened and it came away with no errors or problems.

SOURCE: I have a 2000 buick lesabre. The fix engine soon

It NEVER was the camshaft sensor! Unless, you've removed the engine lately, which I doubt.
RUN to Advance Auto Parts and buy a can of "SeaFoam" and add to your gas tank per instructions...drive at least 100 miles and the problem should go away...IF it doesn't you'll have to replace the O2 sensors in the exhaust system...Any good mechanic should be able to do this for much less $$ than the dealership DO NOT go to the dealer for repairs!
Good Luck

1997 Saturn SC2 speedometer is stuck at 40mph. Replaced Speed Sensor and is still stuck. I even tapped on the cluster and got the needle back to zero but after driving it got stuck at 35mph. What else...

The mechanism or needle in the actual speedo display is sticking, is the needle hitting the glass? It is likely that you will have to change the instrument cluster.

Speedometer needle bounce when turn signal is on.

The speedometer sensor - VSS - vehicle speed sensor is a input to the PCM - powertrain control module -engine computer . The signal from the PCM to the instrument cluster for speed info. is sent on a serial data communication network (class 2 ) I would think it would be an instrument cluster problem . Get a used one from a auto salvage yard 15 - 20 bucks an see if it fixes it . If it does ,send your's out an have it repaired .

I just bought a 1997 buick lasabre and the tach and speedometer work intermittently, what part or parts do I need to replace to resolve the problem ?

It could be the cluster itself, you could also have an electrical problem in the dash, which would have to be diagnosed

The speedometer registers as high as 100mph at normal speed and then flucuates back an forth

if its anything like the 1994 Buick regal there's a plastic worm gear in the speedo that wears out. Keep your eye out for a used cluster.

My speedometer needle is stuck at 140mi mark

when the car is parked and running what does the speedometer read? if "0" it is most likely the speedo transducer<mounted in tranny> if holding still it reads anything higher than "0" it is the speedo itself which requires dash cluster replacement. if that is the case will need to go back to dealer so new dash cluster can be coded to the car.

New Century - DashBoard Problems

My 1999 Buick Regal was doing the same sort of thing. Randomly the gauges would go crazy and then the engine would shut down. I ended up replacing the ignition switch. Not exactly where the key goes in, but the switch box behind it on the inside of the column. I had to take off the steering wheel, air bag and everything, but it hasn't had any problems like that since.

1997 buick lesabre has intermitant speedometer/odometer

Possible ground wire fault with dash board unit. If it is a cable operated spedo, the cable end (small square cap) may be rounding off on one end.
