How do you repair a headlight assembly?

I was in the process of changing out headlight bulbs and and broke something loose inside the assembly on the and now the inside just flops around. Could I maybe drill a small hole and insert a screw through the outer shell into the inner part in the middle to hold it in place? I really don't want to spend $500 to replace it thats for sure.

Changeing headlights

I assume you're referring to the bulbs and not the entire assembly:

First, you have to remove the turn signal assembly. For this, you need a small star shaped screwdriver and remove the 1 screw holding the turn signal in place. Pull straight out and remove the bulbs from the signal assembly by turning the sockets about 1/4 turn. Set that aside.
Second, there's 3 bolts that will be holding the headlight assembly in place. One is accessable from the engine compartment with the hood up. The other two are located under the headlight. (All of them face the front of the car). Remove all three and the headlight will be able to swing out, giving you access to the sockets and bulbs. Remove the bulb connector from the bulb first, then twist the bulb retaining ring and pull the bulb straight out after the ring is off.
Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly.

If you're looking to completely remove the entire headlight assembly, it's the same process, but the piece that lets the headlight swing out (instead of coming off completely) must be removed. It's a simple plastic ball and socket swivel. Just tug hard and the ball will come loose from the socket.

Passenger side headlight assembly removal, is there more than 2 bolts, if so where

You can replace the headlights on your Crossfire easily by yourself. headlight image by Carbonbrain from Fotolia.com

When a headlight burns out on your Chrysler Crossfire, you do not need to rush to the repair shop to have it replaced. You can access the headlights in your Crossfire from within the engine compartment, allowing you to change the headlight yourself. The Crossfire uses an H7U headlight bulb, which you can find at auto parts retail stores or at a Chrysler dealership.
Difficulty: Easy

  1. 1 Open the hood of your Crossfire to gain access to the headlight assemblies. Press down on the tab on top of the light assembly cover. Remove the cover and set it aside.
  2. 2 Pull the electrical connection free of the bulb socket. Press the spring clamps securing the bulb into the light assembly. Pull the bulb straight out of position.
  3. 3 Insert the new bulb in the same position. Ensure that the spring clamps secure the bulb. Press the electrical connection into place.
  4. 4 Replace the light assembly cover and press it into position until it clicks, securing it in place. Repeat the same process on the opposite headlight if required. Close the hood and test the headlight operation.

Replace headlight

Hello,
Follow the process below to replace your headlight:
  • Prop open your hood and locate the release lever for the headlight assembly, the lever is approximately 2 inches under the two upper mounting bolts that hold the fender in place.

  • Press down on the release lever and then push it back up. Pull the headlight assembly forward and slide it out of your Beetle.
  • Unplug the electrical connector from the backside of the assembly. Look toward the top part of the backside of the assembly for a black plastic tab. Push down on the tab and pull the headlight cover up and out.
  • Pull the retaining clip off of the old bulb and remove the old bulb from the assembly by pulling it straight out. Align the bulb correctly with the headlight assembly by matching the marked tabs on the bulb with the raised notches on the assembly. Set the bulb inside the assembly, pushing it down carefully.
  • Push the ends of the retaining clip into the small holes on either side of the new bulb and snap the headlight cover on to secure it.

Take care and good luck

Headlight went out in 2003 ford escape i have

you have to remove the whole headlight assembly, then pop off the front cover pull the old bulb out and put the new one in. reverse the process to re-install. there is a small plastic tab on the topfront of the headlight assembly, that is what you need to release to get the clear cover off and get inside.
