Why does the brake switch keep shorting out?

Have had it replaced four times. First time did not have brake lights and would have problems getting into gear. 2nd time could not get into gear. 3rd time brake lights stayed on, even with key out of the ignition and now am having trouble putting into gear and intermittent brake lights. What could be causing the switch to short?

One of the tail light bulbs can be shorted internally.  Replace the tail light bulbs first.  Try this cheap fix first.

There are, I believe 3 dial knobs to the left of the steering wheel. One is for the interior lights (dash, etc.), One is for the exterior lights, and without looking, one is a timer/or off dial. You can adjust the length of time that the lights stay on, or go off. You can also set for the exterior lights to come on/turn off automatically.

SOURCE: putting car into reverse after having driven short

You need a new Pressure Control Solenoid Body. 9L2Z7G391A -solenoid pack for a 5R55S Trans. $332.20. at Trans Parts supplier. Don't even call a Lincoln Dealer for a price. They wouldn't even deal with me because I have a sales tax ID, and ask too many question. They will screw you over big time. That's a common problem in a long list of LS issues, my wife has one also and I used to have a Trans Repair Shop. It will slam into Reverse cold, Slip or flair on 3 to 4 Shift. Also expect the EGR Valve to go bad and make the trans issue even harder to troubleshoot, untill it works correctly. Drop the tran pan, remove about 7 screws and change the solenoid body. Best bet, go to a trans shop, never a dealer. Also get the old fluid out of there and put Mecon V in ,with a bottle of Red Lubgard Additive.

1999 dodge avenger tail ligts wont go out. They stay on all the time.

No high mount brake light switch? Sure it's the tail lights and not the brake lights? If the brake light switch is out of adjustment, it'll keep the brake lights on full time. The switch is under the dash and touched the pedal arm

The brake light it's on all the time

If your rear brake lights are on all the time, I would first check your brake pedal. Near the top of the pedal, probably just about where the pedal is attached to its pivot, you'll see a little switch that is either pressed in or released when you step on the brakes. That's the switch that controls your rear brake lights. As an experiment, have a helper look at the brake lights while you manually pull or push this switch all the way in and out. These switches wear over time and can stick in position. Fortunately, they're not expensive to replace, if that turns out to be the problem.

If your brake light switch seems to be working properly (hard to tell if the brake lights won't go off), a second possibility is that there's a short somewhere in your wiring and your brake lights are getting power from the shorted wire. I think this is a pretty unlikely cause, because most of the wires that rub up against the brake light wiring are for your turn signals and tail lights, and these are not normally energized. If you said that your brake lights always came on when you activated your turn signal or when you turned on your other lights, then this cause would be much more likely.

Check your brake pedal switch and the wire connections to it. I have a feeling that you'll find your problem.

Brake light keep going out on me. is it the socket itself or electrical problem?

The usuall problem with this problem is water getting into the socket and causing a short. Check the housing gasget so see if this is the case. If so replace the gasget and clean the socket well. If this is not the case check the wire from the socket back to the fuse block.

Try removing the bulbs from the rear tail lights you have one 2 bulb system shorting out, so one at a time remove the bulbs then replace the fuse and see which one is bad or just buy new bulbs and replace, also could be front running light blinker light. But sounds like brake light to ground threw bulb.

2000 Chevrolet s-10 brake lights on.

I have the same problem with my 2000 S10, Is the manufacturer trying to get us killed? I also replaced the brake light switch, adjusted it, and it worked for about a week. I did notice a couple of times that I was getting out of the truck that I got shocked off the door. I talked to an electrician and he said there is possibly a loose ground wire or a wire shorting out somewhere. This is a dangerous situation driving with disfunctional brakelights. It should be a factory recall! Before someone's family ends up dead because of it. I will keep searching for solutions. Thanks.
