Hi i have been told that the above mentioned is neede as my engine rattles could u help me with thaughts on it and rough prices many thanks Terry.

I have a 318i 1999 m it has a knocking/rattling noise when u rev above 3000 or accelerate. but when it drives no noise at all until u push down to overtake or speed off is the noise there. please...

Hi quintincoetz,

If your noise is a ratlling noise, more like a chain top end noise, then I would recommend first checking your oil level and condition. If the oil level is ok, you can remove the oil cap while the engine is running and look for oil lubrication on the valve train. It will probably splatter out a little. The most common cause of the noise is a failing timing chain tensioner. It allows the chain to have too much slack and slap against the guild rails. The tensioner is not too hard to replace and not very expensive either. If you have more than 100k miles, it is recommended to replace anyways. If your noise is more low pitched and more like a knock, I would recommend having a technician look at further.

Just want to find out...does bmw 318i e36 have a timing belt or timing chain?

There are 2 engines used on the 318i. One has a chain the other a belt. The M40B18(1990-1993) uses a cam belt and the M43B18(1993-1998) a chain.

Rattle in front of engine when running. Was told may be timing chain? 160,000+ miles no service history

I had a nasty 'rattle' in the front of my engine on an older truck of mine (around 190,000 miles) and it was the timing chain. The guide for the chain had broken and caused my timing chain to rub against the front cover and start eating it's way out (the rattle). Got it fixed, new chain and replaced the front cover as well and everything is fine. Good luck, I hope this helps.

Head bolt touqe settings

Tightening torques

Do not reuse the bolts as they may be stretched.

Cylinder head to engine block
Stage 1: 32Ft-lbs
Stage 2: +90degrees
Stage 3: +90degrees

Cylinder head to lower timing
chain cover: 89in-lbs

ignition is electronically controlled and cannot be adjusted. It is controlled by circuits in the Electronics Control Module.

Does a 1993 BMW 318i have a timing belt or a timing chain? I just bought this BMW and the previous owner did not know whether or not the timing belt was changed. I've heard that if the timing belt goes out...

Hi some of them have a belt but yours being the M43 engine is a chain, the only thing to listen for with them is chain slap or an rattling around the chain area, a bit of research on the M43 engine also shows that the chain should be changed after 100000 miles as they become weak, Just joined here and found this unsolved i know its a bit late but hope the extra info helps

I am also having trouble with all the dashboard, radio and climate control info not showing up I had a similar problem with a 1997 BMW 540i, and disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes solved the problem. I tried something similar this time, but not happy results. Ideas, suggestions?
