SOURCE: cooling fan not working

The fans only run when the engine reaches approxminatly 235 degrees F. on the guage that is near the end of scale just before guage show "HOT" I don't think you have a problem, allot of folks out there don't know about this.

Cooling fans not working properly

And why do you think this is a problem, they do not run anymore than what is required to cool the engine, as it gets hotter the fans will run longer at a higher speed, but you will seldom see that except on very hot days.

My 1998 Toyota Avalon XLS squeals loadly when I start the engine and the fan is on in the car. I turn of the fan and it stops. After driving I turn the fan back on and don't get the squeal anym

Almost certainly one or more of the drive belts (not the timing belt) on the engine needs an increase in tension. It may tell you about this in the owner's handbook.

If not you can either ask a mechanic to do this straightforward job for you, or try it yourself. You can download a zipped service manual from here

and look these belts up in the charging section and steering section.

Toyota Tercel belts are squealing

I have been having the same problem with the alternator belt squealing, most noticeably, when using the heater fan , accelerating, turning the headlights on. I have a 1997 Toyota Tercel CE 1.5L 4cyl with no A/C. I just tightened the belt tight enough that there is no give to the belt and it does not squeal anymore.

I also used a Goodyear Gatorback from Napa belt which seems to be nice and quiet when tight enough.

My 1994 Honda Accord is losing water from the radiator although no water has been under the car. I Also noticed the cooling fan which use to turn on after the car had been turned off, isn't coming on...

There is a fan sensor in the radiator. If the coolant level uncovers the sensor, the fans won't work properly. Your water loss is caused by the engine burning coolant. Look at the exhaust pipe to see if any water is dripping from the tail pipe with the engine running. Diagnosing the problem can be tricky. It can be a blown head gasket or a crack in a cylinder head or block.

Radiator fan doesn't work when car is turned off

There are a few temperature sending sensors on the head and depending on the outside temp or driving temp it might not turn on when the car is off. If you have replaced your coolant recently it might be keeping the engine cool to the point of not needing to come on with car the off.

I don't know if your truck uses this method but several vehicles I have owned would turn on the electric cooling fan to combat the natural temperature rise that occurs in the engine once the coolant is not circulating anymore.
This prevents hard starting in a hot engine and if the thermostatic switch fails that controls the fan, the cooling (and turn-on) doesn't happen.
This may be your problem.
