Harmonic balancer About 3 months ago needed to have my harmonic balancer and serpentine beltreplaced due to a loud clunking noise that was happening at idle orvery slow speeds. I got the balancer used from a scrap yard to save afew bucks. About one month later the noise started again. I don't want to buya new part and have the repair done again just for it to fail again.Did I get a bad part or could something else be causing the balancer tofail? Also, what will eventually happen if I just don't replace it? Thecar runs great, but the noise is a nuisance and embarrassing.

Most likely the engine harmonic balancer on the front of the crankshaft is coming apart. This is a fairly common issue.

The balancer is bad, or it has come loose. There is a little metal wedge piece called a woodruff key that holds the balancer in place, and then the crankshaft center bolt keeps the balancer on tight.
There should be no wobble or movement at all of the harmonic balancer. Take it off, it may still be alright, but find out why the pulley moves on the crankshaft. Maybe the key is missing. This should not be an expensive repair-it's not a problem with the motor, just that balancer pulley.

The serpentine drive belt is worn or stretched causing the belt tensioner to rattle. Install a new belt and it will be gone. Good luck! Scott

You need a harmonic balance. Very common problem!

Yes, the balancer may be coming apart. Check the rubber between the two pieces to see if it has shifted. Also see if the belt is aligned with all the pulleys

if you can turn the serpentine belt either direction by hand at all you probably need a harmonic balancer..or just look in the passenger wheelwell at the h/balencer and see if the rubber is cracked all the way around.. just fixed one with that issue
