No, it doesn't twist in. It's located in a housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose. If you are unsure of how to replace it, leave it to a professional.

SOURCE: Chaning right wheel bearing on 1999 Chevy Malibu

It is much easier, and cheaper to find a steering knuckle or "hub assembly" in a salvage yard.
To begin, jack up the car and remove the wheel. Be certain the car is stable and will not roll off jack(s)!
Remove the spindle nut. Remove the brake caliper (hang on a wire). Remove the bolt for lower ball join. Remove the bolt that goes thru strut. Now, pull assembly off while prying to ease pressure from the lower control arm.
Depending on how many miles you have on the car, you might want to head-off some future trouble by replacing the half-axle while you have the front end disassembled.

That engine does not have a timing belt, it has a timing chain and therefore much easier to work with as it can only go on a certain way, the primary focus being getting the dots on the timing chain sprockets lined up properly.

I believe, with the engine at Top Dead Center on cylinder #1, the dots will be facing each other. That is to say, the do on the cam sprocket will be facing the dot on the crank sprocket.

SOURCE: How to change a heater core in a 1999 Chevy Malibu?

Before starting this job I would get a repair manual. This is not a easy job, 6+ hours for an experienced tech with all of the right tools. And you may have to discharge and recharge the AC system.

Thanks Pierre!

Merci beaucoup!

Everything worked as mentionned. Be carefull with the plastic in the winter. Make sure to use a flat screw driver and get it close to the slider and not on the edge. I cracked one of the tongues. Those L shaped slots are under the plastic cover with the two big plastic plugs that you also remove with the flat screw driver

Question turned around for clarity.
Question moved to model category.

Probably the same as Impala?

https://www.justanswer.com/chevy/7fo9e-chevrolet-impala-lt-need-torque-thermostat-housing.html

I just learned that there was revised torque specs for this engine. I missed that bulletin

current specs,
89 inch lbs or 7.4 ft lbs.

Best idea is tight and a little bit more.

How do I replace thermostat on 1999 chevy malibu

Follow the top radiator hose to the engine block, at the end of this hose is the thermostat housing. remove this housing , then remove the old thermostat. Install the new thermostat be careful not to over tighten bolts.
Note!!
First make sure the car is cool. drain the coolant in a clean catch pan, you can reuse it if you keep it clean.

Why is coolant spitting out of reservor of 1999 chevy malibu

Probably a blown head gasket. Not an easy fix and not for the faint of heart.

My 1999 chevy malibu is overheating and my fluids are up to par so what could be the problem?

Check the thermostat to be sure it is opening. A quick way is to check the temperature of the radiator or hold the top hose when the engine is cold, warm it up and see if the hose gets hot. If it stays colder than the engine then the thermostat is nor opening. Otherwise clean the radiator inside and out. Make sure that the fan is starting when hot.

99 Chevy Malibu - auto trans - no dipstick

You have what is called a closed cased transmission. You have to crawl underneathe to get to the tranny and remove the upper bolt close to the side of the case (more towards the bottom of the transmission). When you fill it, you fill it till it starts to drip out of that hole.

Looking for a picture for you.
