It's fearless again. Now the transfer case light won't go off. I disconnected the bat cable...but light is still on. I did what you said Curt....4 wheel engages fine. Any ideas on this 87 Cherokee?

Hi Curt. Transfer case was almost empty.....I drained what little was in there. The lights been on for a couple months. Now it's properly filled and the light is still on. I put new tires on...nothing too big....just the standard size. It's got me stumped. 4 wheel engages fine's just that light won't go off. hhmmm Thanks for your help. Us females need some kind of guidance on these things. Thanks for being there...Guru. fearless

Hi Curt. The manual says nothing about I figure I'll just put some black tape on it and it's out! I knew they called them idiot lights for a reason. But it bugs me too. If it was because of low would now go off. Sometimes moisture can get in there and the light go on. As long as shes working I'll just leave it alone. Thanks much for all your help! Much appreciated. fearless

Transfer case, Dexron II or Mercon auto trans fluid, Fill/check level plug above, drain plug lower (both on front face of housing), 20 ft lbs. to tighten, I believe I use a large crescent wrench to remove/install (of course I couldn't use my torque wrench).

You're welcome fearless48, I had a 88 Cherokee, loved it wish I still had it (bought it new had about 240k miles on it when I decided it was time to go). Please rate solution if u can, would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

fearless, let's see what's going on here. Did u change the transfer case fluid, or just top it off? Was the light on before this, or after?

  • Curt Downs Nov 13, 2008

The transfer case light is bugging me! My repair manual does not mention it at all. Do u have the owners manual? I'm just wondering what the light is supposed to indicate (low fluid level?). If my 88 had that light, it never went on, cause I wasn't aware that it had such a warning light. Glad it's running well, the light just has me curious as to what it is supposed to indicate. Curt

How much does a rear trans seal cost 1995 jeep cherokee

4wd? which tranny? some are 2wd, you know that?
we can not guess that.
and the seal is free, the labor is 99.9999% of the cost.
if you work on 4wd cars, you learn fast what labor means.
ROB, the jeep dealer sells it, and is on line and you can see the cost there, any time , anywhere on earth (WWW)
here is the link. to one of 100s.

my 5 jeeps, 88 to now
all have 5/6speed and 4wd
what is yours? ive not a clue.
is the transfer case leaking (if you even have one)
is the trans leaking, rear.? as you say.?
on mine, if the tranmission rear leaks oil, its not the transmission leaking because , only the transfer case can leak, see?
it replaces the tranny seal with the transfer case.
on one old jeep the front xtransfer case seal can leak to the center section. so look under your car , and tell us, exactly the spot of the leak. even a photo speaks 1000 words , or more for leaks.
what i do is clean it first, drive 10 miles then look.
wind and gravity are not our friends here.

In some cases, its better to just let it leak
but again, no drive line options stated at all ,so can NOT advise.

I have 31x10.5x15 tires on the rear and stock 15in tires on the front of a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The front end is trying to lock in 4 wheel low. Is it because of the different size tires? Can I disable...

Tire size is critical on any jeep but especially so on ones with quadratrac transfer cases. If you run different size tires it will cause the fluid coupler inside the case to overheat and fail. (big$ to repair)
Don't drive it that way and get a matching set of tires on there asap!!!

Change transmission fluide in 1999 Jeep Cherokee

To change the transmission fluid you drop the transmission pan should be about 16 bolts. Once that is off you will see the filter. Buy the kit from a local auto parts store and look to see what the filter looks like. Check your transmission fluid once you drain to see metallic look in it if so i would suggest a transmission flush.

Noise in transfer case plus uneven tire size

Sound's like you might have damaged the transfer case due to differant tire size. The differant tire size causes uneven rotation inside the case and it will damage it.Take to tranny shop and have them check out.

Transfer case whining at all speeds

Check the fluid level in there. If it was low for an extended period, change fluid. Whining is often caused by low fluid level, but is also a symptom of internal wear. If fluid change does not help, it needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

Transfer case wont work

might want to make shure the shifter linkage arm is in gear. if the linkage is bent at all it will hold the trans inbetween gears not allowing the motor to spin the drive shaft
