87 jeep cherokee 5 speed tranny....need to know what fluids to go into transfer case and size of plug>
Transfer case, Dexron II or Mercon auto trans fluid, Fill/check level plug above, drain plug lower (both on front face of housing), 20 ft lbs. to tighten, I believe I use a large crescent wrench to remove/install (of course I couldn't use my torque wrench).
You're welcome fearless48, I had a 88 Cherokee, loved it wish I still had it (bought it new had about 240k miles on it when I decided it was time to go). Please rate solution if u can, would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!
Curt
fearless, let's see what's going on here. Did u change the transfer case fluid, or just top it off? Was the light on before this, or after?
The transfer case light is bugging me! My repair manual does not mention it at all. Do u have the owners manual? I'm just wondering what the light is supposed to indicate (low fluid level?). If my 88 had that light, it never went on, cause I wasn't aware that it had such a warning light. Glad it's running well, the light just has me curious as to what it is supposed to indicate. Curt

Thanks much countrycurt0!
It's fearless again. Now the transfer case light won't go off. I disconnected the bat cable...but light is still on. I did what you said Curt....4 wheel engages fine. Any ideas on this 87 Cherokee?
Hi Curt. Transfer case was almost empty.....I drained what little was in there. The lights been on for a couple months. Now it's properly filled and the light is still on. I put new tires on...nothing too big....just the standard size. It's got me stumped. 4 wheel engages fine now....it's just that light won't go off. hhmmm Thanks for your help. Us females need some kind of guidance on these things. Thanks for being there...Guru. fearless
Hi Curt. The manual says nothing about it....so I figure I'll just put some black tape on it and it's out! I knew they called them idiot lights for a reason. But it bugs me too. If it was because of low fluid...it would now go off. Sometimes moisture can get in there and the light go on. As long as shes working I'll just leave it alone. Thanks much for all your help! Much appreciated. fearless
