Ok the 2002 Maxima 3.5 requires premium fuel 91 octane. According to the owners manual for optimum performance use 91 octane, you can use 87 octane unless you get pinging sounds. Sounds like you just need to use the proper octane. Occasionally I will run regular 87 and can really feel a loss of power. When I use 91 octane the car is a rocket ship.
you can get 91 octane , ethanol free and that is suitable for the engine

the higher octane rating fuels will also run in the engine and there will be a slight increase in performance but the increase is not cost effective as against standard 91
personally as ethanol is hygroscopic( absorbs moisture from the air) I would not recommend it's use in any fuel in a car that is not inconstant use such as a taxi where the fuel turn over is high
you will probably get some valve rattle if you run 89 octane (mid-grade), unless you supplement the octane with some octane boost, im pretty sure the manufacturer suggested high octane, i own a 95Z28 and i only run high octane, if i run 89 i get lots of valve rattle
No it will not hurt and there is no reason to switch to a higher octane gasoline with this engine. Certain engines in Corvette, Cadillac, etc with special combustion chambers utilizing different types of metal for performance need higher octane gasoline. Your v6 does not. If you hear knocking, have your valves checked and make sure you oil pressure is good. If you switched for no reason, switch back and save yourself $$$
how many miles are on it, if you biuld one it will cost alot with no warranty or you can buy a crate motor from gm with awarranty, i have put in a few crate motors and the run like crazy.
Thats because the older style GM blowers depended a lot on bushings for rotation, and as we all know bushings just cant outlast bearings. It looks like you'll need to replace that fan motor.

You can use 87 octane, but first let me give you some food for thought, when you use lower octane than recommended the knock or ping sensor will ****** the timing to accommodate the lower octane fuel and prevent piston damage, this causes a loss of fuel economy and power, so the real saving is very small if at all, but yes your car will run fine in all but very hot climates, like the southwestern states. I hqave a Corvette, it calls for 91 Octane, I have run 87 in it to save money, but the fuel mileage drops 3 MPG, so I gave that up.
