Now i dont know a lot about automatics especially modern ones with all this fancy electronics thats used nowdays but i think its a fault with the temperature sensor for the gearbox. But where its located and what it looks like i have no idea it could even be mounted inside the gearbox .Sorry not a very good answer from a mechanic but?? very few of our europeon cars come with auto transmission .Evan when i do know whats wrong i cannot buy the parts for the gearbox as only re-con boxes supplied by the dealer so best advice is to try a specialist in auto box repairs only .PS some of my best students when i used to teach mechanics many moons ago were the girls so no excuses like iam only a girl please

My 2004 kia rio is reading a trouble code-p0713, which describes the transmission fluid temp. Sensor high input. It is a dealership code but the dealership told me that I would have to replace the trans. I...

I would get a second opinion.
Code 713 means the temp sensor is not sending a signal to the computer to tell it what the trans fluid temp is.
The sensor should be on top of the transmission under the air cleaner.
Most any shop should be able to replace it in less than an hour.
They should test it first to make sure the problem is not in the wiring harness.
About the only way the transmission would be junk is if it had overheated which I doubt has happened.
Again, get a second opinion.

Has anyone had a 2004 kia rio with a p0712 ? what was your fix ?

This would mean (a) the transmission fluid temp sensor is bad, or (b) the computer is bad, or
(c) the connector or wires to the sensor have corroded/been damaged somehow.

Definition of your code:
P0712 Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Circuit Low Input

which means that the voltage coming from the sensor is read by the computer as too low,
which also means that it could be zero. Zero voltage can happen if the transmission fluid temperature
sensor connector has been unpluged, or one of the wires to the sensor have been cut/damaged/corroded.
If there has been recent repair activity to the car, then its possible that this sensor's wires or
connector has been disconnected/cut/damaged somehow.
