Question about 2006 Lexus Is 250

Car will not start

I turned off the car, mistakenly left in Reverse. Went into the house for a few hours. Came out placed the car into Park, car would not turn over. NO turn over at all. I have a Push start model. It's like the car is in the Immobilizier mode. Battery would not jump, replace battery this morning, still nothing same problem as before. Any ideas?

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

SOURCE: Where is the Alternator located in a 1997 Lexus LS 400

If the car ran and got you home after a jump start I doubt the alternator is bad. Check your battery. And remember never ever disconnect the battery cable with the engine running.

It cranks but won't fire? Possible Fuel pump. Do you have access to a fuel pressure gauge?

While your car is running, measure the voltage at your battery terminals. If the alternator is wotking, it should measure over 13 volts, since the battery is really low. On a healthy battey the voltage is around 14.5 volts when the engine is running. If the car is running and you measured 12.6 volts or less, change the alternator. I have actually worked on a lexus ls400 with exact same problem. I had rebuilt the alternator myself to save the customer on parts. Because altenator is not cheap on lexus. There is an ace hardware by my shop where they carried some carbon brush, all you got to do is file it down to fit, and solder them. Of course you have to open the alternator to do that. The brushes cost about a few bucks. You can buy these at auto parts too but not for that particular alternator. Auto parts like to make money and would rather sell you the whole thing. LOL

To determine your battery problem or your alternater problem not providing charge enough, you can:
1-Measure Voltage of your battery without the engine on. It should be 12.3V.
2- Measure Voltage of your battery with the engine on. It should be 13.4 V
3- Your readings come out low than reference then you have a faulty parts to replace.
4- Before replacing a battery, charge it up to 12 hours with house charger to see if you can salvage it. If it is not fully charged, then replace it.
5- The cost of a charger is compatible to a new battery, If you don't have one then just replace the battery if it over 5 years.
6- If you don't have multimeter to do the test, bring the car to Autozone to test, it is free.

Gear shifter is in Park, but dash reads it's in Reverse. Car won't turn over because it is in Reverse now.

You have to locate where the park ignition switch is located. Some are on the transmission and some are in the column under the dash. It probably got moved.

It sounds like a linkage in steering column or at transmission has come undone or broken. You should be able to see the arm that comes down from the steering column to the transmission if you crawl under with a light. That's could be an an easy fix, but getting in the steering column is best left to professionals. Hope that helps.
