Ringing noise coming from engine area while my 1992 Mercury Topaz is idling in drive, reverse, or while wheel is turned.

Buddy of mine said it could be the harmonic balancer? Sound goes away if car is moving, or car is placed in neutral. Doesn't do it while idling in park unless the wheel is being turned one way or the other.

Any help, and wisdom would be greatly appreciated!!

    Ringing noise occurs mostly while car is idling in drive, or reverse, but goes away if car placed in neutral or I start driving.

Your buddy is correct. they had problems with the balancers separating . fairly easy to replace

Where is the fuel pump relay located on a 1992 Mercury topaz
the fuel pump relay is located on the left shock tower in the engine compartment in a black box 6x4x1 inches. there are other relays inside the same box which is actually called the ccrm or constant contorl relay module, there should be a double connector with 20 to 26 wires in it, hard to miss.

How do i turn up my idle
idle is preset at the factory .. but some cars are equipped with an air conditioner adjuster . which will actually speed up the engine when you turn on the AC .. look at it when you start the AC and you will see it is adjustable to speed up the engine some ... thanks Jerry

I had the same problem. It was the idle air control valve. It sits on top of the intake just downstream from the throttle. There's a valve rod inside that gets worn over time and starts to stick. If that's what is causing your problem, you need to replace the unit.
