When the car would start, it would idle really high, and it would make a loud clicking noise until the gear was shifted out of park. While driving down the highway, the car died. Tried jumping the car, didnt work. Car had to be pulled by a z71 truck to a gas station, where we hooked the jumper cables to another vehicle, it would turn over, just not start. We added more fuel to the car, and tried starter fluid, still would not start.
Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities.
It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then
it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure
or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty
ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned. To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required. Click this link below and follow the troubleshooting:------ http://technoanswers.blogspot.in/2012/02/car-starting-issues.html --------- This will help. Thanks.
I am not sure if the engine blew due to the high idle and engine noise but lets start with the basics. From what you told me, this is not a fuel problem, you used starting fluid and did not start , so that eliminates the fuel pump. this leaves a spark problem or bad engine.
You will need to test for spark, if there is spark then you may have engine damage.remove a spark plug wire from a spark plug and insert a screwdriver into the boot and place it near a good metal ground, then as you watch have someone crank engine while you look for spark. check a few cylinders and let me know what you get.
If there is no spark then remove the distributor cap and crank engine to make sure the distributor is spinning, if it spins then remove the control module from the distributor and have it tested. you may have a bad module.Note; bad module is only if there is no spark.
If you have spark and we know you tried fuel then the next step is to look for internal engine damage. this is done first by doing a compression test on all cylinders. hope this helps, let me know the results to your testing so i can help you find the problem.
Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
