Remove the spare tire under the hood.
Your dipstick for the transmission (if its a stick) will be under the tire.

SOURCE: My 94 Suburu Loyale Started doing a steady ticking

Hi, it is likely you have a bad valve lash adjuster. Pretty common in these cars, as I helped another customer with the same problem. The labor to fix this was a lot, because the engine had to be disassembled. Repair procedures are available if you are inclined to do the work yourself.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Through the tube that the transmission dipstick is. Use an elongated funnel to add transmission fluid. Monitor the fluid level. Loss of transmission fluid could lead to major problems.

Problems with the transmisson

Whit the engine ruining check your transmission fluid level
is possible than you have a transmission fluid leak and don't have enough fluid to work properly. NOTE: Do not ever fill it because that can case your transmission to wear out faster.
And make sure the car is on a level place and the engine is running while you check the level.

Transmission fluid leak

Fluid has slowly drained from the torque converter back to the trans itself and out the overflow... You'll need to start it for a minute then check the fluid... probably need to add fluid to it.
