Repeated Motor Mount Failure on 2001 Mitsubishi Galant.

My car is a 2001 Galant 4-cylinder with 130K miles. Had the motor mounts replaced, and they failed, then when I had the timing belt/water pump replaced, I had them repaired again. The first time was with aftermarket parts, the second time with OEM parts. I don't hot rod this car. Is there anything the mechanic could be doing - or not doing - to cause this successive failure?

Odd situation. There's four mounts only: one on the transmission, one next to the water pump, and two on the center arm (front and rear engine sides). Mounts can fail due to oil contamination, and of course, rough treatment, which you say you don't do.

The center arm mounts are the most common failures, as these absorb the torque movements of the engine. Multiple failures are unusual, and aftermarket mounts are usually acceptable quality.

The question is now which mount or mounts were replaced. It would be VERY, make that EXTREMELY, unusual to have all mounts fail, and to happen twice in 130K. I would now question the motives or skill of the mechanic. Perhaps there was another noise of clunking that was described as "motor mount" failures.

SOURCE: 2001 Mitsubishi Galant Motor Mounts Failing

Check the NHTSA comments on AboutAutomobile.com. They have a list of consumer complaints separated by vehicle and also the makers action plan or Recall number.

You can start an investigation with your report too.

Sometimes with repeated failures like yours there are other causes. I am not familiar with your brand, but if you have rear wheel drive, then the transmission mounts can be soft and putting to much of a strain on the motor mounts.

The body or frame can be less rigid than normal and allowing the engine to twist with the Torque from the motor. You may also need to center the engine on its mounts before tightening it down the mounts for good. There may be shims missing to help align the drivetrain.

If this vehicle has a driveshaft, you should feel any vibration in it, but a bad vibration can affect the motor mounts too!

Check the site I mentioned for details.

How do replace the water pump in a 2001 mitsubichsi galant

You have to take off the the steering pump belt, alternator belt, upper engine belt cover , support the motor, take off the right motor mount, take off the lower engine belt cover, take off the timing belt, and take off the water pump belt to get access to the water pump. Then be sure to put on all new belts when reassembling.

I having trouble finding the crank position sensor on my mitsubishi galant.

You did not specify year or engine size, but...

The crank position sensor is located inside the timing cover, behind the crank pulley.

The wiring for it extends out of the timing cover by the motor mount upwards to a three wire triangular connector. On four cylinders the connector is mounted by the front corner of the head. V6 models the connector is mounted in the valley between the heads.

Later 4cyl models integrate the connector into the lower cover, but the sensor location is still the same.
