What should the charging volts be on my 3007 Dodge Sprinter V6 diesel with the engine running? When new it was charging at 14.0 - 14.1 volts. Now, at times it only charges at 12.8 - 12.9 volts and then will jump up to 13.4 - 13.5 volts. It never exceeds 13.5 volts. Should I be concerned?
Do you have any indication that the battery is not being charged properly, such as slow cranking speed when trying to start?
With the engine not running, the battery (fully charged) should show about 12.5 volts with a voltmeter. With the engine running at normal (not idle) speed, the voltage should be 13.5 - 14.5 volts depending on the state of charge of the battery. At idle, the voltage may drop below 13.5 volts depending on how many accessories you have turned on (headlights, a/c, blower motor, radio, etc). If the 12.8 - 12.9 volts you referenced is at idle with accessories on, but increases when you increase engine speed, you're probably OK.

remove air cleaner...then remove the black engine cover....the filter is under it

I had the same problem on a 94 dodge with the cummins. It seems the crank sensor that reads from a notch on the harmonic balancer was the problem Without this sensor reading that the engine is running the alternator wont charge. Possibly the same problem with yours

before replace your turbo as suggested so called try and error mechanics on your cost, you might want to check your turbo resonator, its common problem with dodge sprinters, in europe no resonator fitted on mercedes sprinters

check your injector returns, and diesel filter return pipes as well as injector washers

the voltage regulator is in the computer, check you battery with volt meter with engine off it should say 12volts then check it again with engine running and it should say 14-15 volts. if not the you will have to take it to a dealer to check the computer, hope this will help you!!!
