1992 Chrysler New Yorker transmission won't shift out of first gear.

The engine runs fine, but the tranmission will not shift up. You can go anywhere as long as you are not in a hurry.

I have the same problem with my 1992 New Yorker all of the sudden, after trans fluid and pan change, it won't shift gears.

  • drushlow Nov 18, 2008

car will start and run fine then after a while will pop into neutral and when it decides to pop back into gear its stuck in 1st gear or low gear "what have you". I pull over turn off the car, restart the car and 90% of the time its fine but eventually it does the same thing. its been going on for a couple days now?

    any ideas?

Yes it went into limp-in mode -2nd gear and reverse only. This may or may not be a serious problem. Try removing one of the battery terminals for a few min and see if it persists. If so, you need to get the codes as a starting point to diagnosis.

Hi,

i had the same problem like drushlow in my Eagle Vision, wich has the same engine and transmission. Your transmission is going into safety mode wich allows you to go on but just in 2nd gear. The Problem in my car was the EGR Valve. In other words the engine had a problem and the transmission swiched into safety mode to make sure the engine don´t get any more damage. So i´m very sure your transmission is still OK but there is only one way to find out what is wrong. Drive to a chrysler dealer and read the errror code (that only cost you 20 to 40 dollars). After that you know what´s wrong and can decide what you wanna do.

I had a Dynasty with the same issue. The solonioid in these transmissions can be an issue. Change your fluid and filter also. This elimintates the suspicion of low flow and the chambers not filling properly.

2002 Chrysler Voyager 3.3. Transmission won't shift gears from drive?

Question edited for clarity. 'year make model' first, 'want' and 'won't' are not interchangeable words. 'won't' = 'will not'.

What tranmission fluid do I Use for a 1987 Chysler New Yorke?

It should say right on the dipstick. I believe that year was still dexron/mercon. You would be fine using chrysler ATF+4 as it has superseded all previous Chrysler specs for trans fluid. Make sure you checke the fluid when the transmissions up to temp, on a level surface, engine running, and run through all the gears with foot on the brake right before checking the fluid level.

I have a 1992 chrysler new yorker, it will not go over 40 miles per hour, is that a transmission problem?

OK, if the engine is overspeeding at 40 mph and won't rev any higher, then I would say the transmission is not up shifting to higher gears. A solenoid blocked up or defective may be the problem. I would then have the transmission replaced or rebuilt to solve the problem.

If the engine is not overspeeding, then I would look at the engine itself not providing enough horse power for the transmission to up shift in the first place.

Good luck on this repair.

Does the 1992 chrysler new yorker have a transmission sensor?

What type of sensor do you mean? I don't think it has sensors like a more modern transmission as far as the VSS, for instance, because it has a speedometer cable in that place and bands.

I think the 1992 Chrysler New Yorker had an older style transmission that didn't use a computer sensor as far as I read, anyway.

Does that answer the question?

Transmission shifts to second gear and stays there

Could Be that your TCM is losing power. I would check to see if the TCM is firmly attached to the passenger side fender wall. If not it could be losing the ground.
