P1744 is tc performance. Need new tc or try changing speed sensor.

SOURCE: engine service light / 4 codes read description below

P1744 is probably the TC going on the way out. :(

P 340 is probably the sensor itself. Don't get the Dorman one if it is the OHV motor.

P 401 is probably a bad DPF EGR sensor.

SOURCE: where is the torque converter

If you are having an issue with the TCC, replace your torque convertor. There is no easy way to do this. This type of repair is best left to transmission experts. It is involved just to get the transmission out. If you would like instructions to do so, let me know.

SOURCE: 2001 taurus has been surging

This is going to need to be inspected by a trusted transmission expert in your area. This has got to be a visual inspection and diagnosis. If this has been serviced very recently, get the estimate and take it back to the shop that did the service. It sounds like it may have been overfilled or the wrong filter installed (not likely). It is also possible to have had a leak and when it finally got to a critical level, started surging and overheated causing the fluid to almost boil. This is the code definition -

That code is a transmission code for the Torque converter being stuck in the off Position.

P1744 Torque Converter Clutch System Stuck in Off Position

You will need to have the transmission checked. Due to the cost of transmission repairs, if you have a warranty that will give you the option of returning the vehicle and getting your money back I would do that. It is likely they were aware of the transmission problem and simply cleared the code thinking it would make it past the warranty and it didn't. Here is the link to the codes page I use for inforamtion on this:

WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO REPLACE A/C CLUTCH ASSEMBLY ON 2001 FORD TAURUS

remove the 11 year old compressor, take it in to a parts store and exchange the whole thing for a rebuilt one. at that age it makes no sense to just replace the clutch when the compressor is at the end of its service life as well. do yourself a favor and pay a repair shop specializing in car heat and A/C to install it and recharge the system for you.

Are there codes in the transmission computer? Likely the torque converter clutch is not disengaging or a holding member with the transmission could not be releasing. this could be caused by a faulty shift solenoid or a mechanical failure with the transmission. Check to ensure the transmission shift properly under all conditions. Also, stall test the torque converter, put it in gear hold the brakes firm and throttle the engine. Generally the torque converter will stall out around or above 2,000 rpm. If it stalls out much lower, check the torque converter clutch solenoid for proper operation.

Again, check the transmission computer for codes. You will need an advanced OBD1 scan tool which can communicate like a hikock scan tool ( ford factory for that era)

Transmission seemed like it went into neutral @ 70mph , now it does'nt respond to any gear position.

Well taking that it is a Automatic and the gearbox has been working ok up to now and then it went all of a sudden it sounds like either the Torque converter has broken in side or the oil pump also the coverter isent working OR the filter in the gearbox fitted to the valve body is clogged or valve body isent selecting and letting the fluid to pass by.
So answer is to take to the auto matic people for a service and they will let you know for sure.

The engine light came on, not the check engine light but an actual picture of an engine light came on... what does that mean 2001 taurus

On a ford taurus the check engine light is just a picture of an engine. Have it scanned for codes. Autozone will do this for free.

My car wont start. when i try to turn it on an exclamtion mark on

The indicator light tells you that the computer is generating an error code.

To determine what is causing your problem, you need to have the OBD2 port scanned. If you take the car to a local repair shop or auto parts store, they can use their scan tool to download the trouble codes.

From there, the can tell yoy what the codes mean and present possible solutions for you to consider.

2001 ford taurus TRANSMISSION PROBLEM

most likely due to a stripped out torque converter or a broken pump shaft. trans. has to come out to repair either or. you should make sure the fluid is full first. with the car running and warm, check fluid- if it seems over full, the pump shaft is broken, if it's just full- probably the torque conv., if its low add trans. fluid (mercon 5) 1 qt. at a time until in crosshatched area on the dipstick. hope this helps and good luck
