When my 1993 jimmy 4.3 vortec shifts from first to second it shifts so hard the tires will spin.what will cause this?
Shift solenoid A is on it's way to failing. Mine did this for a while, later down the road i didnt have 1st or 4th gear at all. When i replaved the solenoid the shifting was perfect.
If its an auto the chances are that the kickdown is to high and needs adjusting, basically the engine is reving to high betwen gear changes

If the car is grinding when going into reverse, you need to have the clutch bled or repaired.
If it goes into reverse with out grinding, I am sorry to tell you your problem is internal to the gearbox. Bad or damaged Syncro
Good luck
SOURCE: transmission won't shift from low gear .
Check you transmission fluid if its thin theres your issue if not it could be your bands or your torque converter.
SOURCE: auto trans shifting VERY HARD, possible cause?
It could be several things but I will give you a few ideas anyways to try and avoid the costly Ford dealer mechanics. Check your transmission fluid to make sure that it is full and that is still good and red. You may also want to just go ahead and change your transmission fluid but when you do so remove your transmission pan. Inside your transmission pan is your automatic transmission fluid filter screen. Make sure to clean it thoroughly and put back on filling the transmission with new fluid. Cleaning the screen is probably the most likely thing that will help. You also might want to consider using a transmission fluid additive that will help it shift easier. I've had pretty good luck with Lucas's products. Hope this helps. Be sure to let me know how it goes and if you need more help clarifying. Goodluck.

Tighten clutch cable until the car would start to move when the clutch peddle is 50% depressed, Before you do that, with the clutch fully depressed and in 2nd gear, start the car and slowly let off the clutch. You may find that the clutch has to be released virtually all the way before the car moves. It should be at about that 50% I spoke about
