It puts the transmission into "winter" mode. In this mode the transmission from a stop will start in 3rd gear. This is to reduce wheel spin in slippery or icy conditions

On the facia panel of your gearshift there is a small black cover located at the rear of the panel ,on some models there is a hole to the right of the gearshift, forward of the facia panel . Put a thin screw driver down this hole , you will need to feel around and locate the button/lever, it is sprung loaded and can be pushed down with the screw driver . It will release the gearshift but it is advisable to see technician as mine was caused from faulty wires on trailer and had blew a fuse to .

Change gear knob

This is an "it depends" answer. It depends on the type of gearshift knob and its installation. If your vehicle is equipped with a manual shift and the shift lever is little more than a steel rod sticking up from the console, then it is easy to replace.

To replace it, simply do this:

1. Set the parking brake
2. Take the car out of gear
3. Center the gearshift
4. Place a piece of cloth around the gearshift knob to prevent damage
5. Place a ViceGrip (R) or pair of pliers around the cloth on the gearshift knob and gently begin turning the knob to the left
6. Spin the knob off the shaft

Remember, though, this works only if the gearshift knob does not have another function combined. For example, you might find a reverse gear actuator on the top of the gearshift knob or you might find a reverse actuator button on the front face of the gearshift knob. This type of combined function gearshift knob is usually found on automatic transmissions.

If you want to remove the gearshift knob from this type of shift, see the service manual and obtain the tools you will need as this type of gearshift knob is much more complex to remove and involves many different systems that have to be addressed before the knob will come off.

It is better to leave this type of fix to trained technicians.

Gearshift button is stuck can't get out of park

The most common cause of this is the brake interlock. You must press the brake in order to press the gearshift button. If you are pressing the brake firmly and still cannot drepress the gear shift button, repair of that function would be necessary.

there is a switch under the dash.. if you look and press the brake with your hand, you will see it press against a little switch button.. that button is bad, it unlocks the gearshift so you can select the gear you want.. replace that switch, and your problem will be solved

How do you fix a sticking shift button on a Volvo S40?

Look at the button and see if the plastic covering is coming apart. If it is, this is what is causing it to stick, and the gearshift know will need to be replaced.Check also for any blockage on the button.

I have a Dodge Caliber 1.8 SXT and want to change the transmission fluid. It is a manual transmission and if i look it up in the owners manual, it tells me to use ATF 4... is this right? Further i did take...

Yes, the ATF4 is the correct transmission fluid to use in your Dodge Caliber. As for finding the fill plug it should be a bolt screwed into the side of the tail housing midway between where the gearshift goes in and the end of the transmission. Look on both sides. If it is not there, you may be required to pull the gearshift out of the transmission, this is not hard to do. Simple remove the gearshift boot cover and there should be 4 bolts holding what is known as the gearshift inspection plate. Remove these bolts with the gearshift in neutral, pull directly up on the gearshift and it should come out of the transmission, but by all means search for a fill plug first.

I don't know of any free downloadable manuals out there but you could call salvage yards around your area and see if they can get one out of any wrecks or call your local GM dealership and get the phone # to GM customer assitance maybe they can help. All of the trackers that I worked on at the dealership I never seen a white button it doesn't sound like it is a factory installed button.THe gearshifter light is a bulb either a 194 or 168 pull up the housing after removing screws and replace bulb. GOOD LUCK
