2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo started smoking!

I had the engine on and the air conditioner going and was parked waiting for my sister to get out of school. Next thing I know the engine is smoking - I mean A LOT. I tried to move from where I was parked - right out in front of my sisters school!! - about then I could smell something burning and I turned off engine. After 30 mins I started the jeep and drove about 3 blocks to my grandfather's home. He seemed to think it was my radiator hose. We ordered one, replaced it, the jeep is smoking very little and running good. My grandfather said the plastic part that is actually attached to the radiator looks like it is cracked. What do you think happened? And I need to do what?

    frankster016,

Thanks for the info. I didn't know what to expect from this site but I am pleasantly surprised!

From how I understand it - there are two different radiators that might go in this jeep.

One is a radiator where you could replace the cracked hose or attachment only OR the other - the

entire radiator would need to be replaced. We had to replace the entire radiator. It wasn't too terribly expensive. The mechanic that did this said that we should be careful taking longer trips - he said the fan closest to the radiator doesn't do it's job by keeping things cool and NOT breaking or cracking. As I read on this site I am seeing that does seem to be a common problem. Any words of wisdom of how I should address this concern? Thanks again frankster016!!

Fill the rad and check for leaks. Bring the engine temp up to normal, if necessary. Try not to spill any water when filling the rad, if you do, let it dry before starting the car, JKust makes it easier to find the leak. Frankster016

I have a 2001 WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. At times when cornering, there is the sound of water, or other liquid sloshing around in the dash in front of the passenger seat. Could this be accumulated ...

ac units are very well sealed and any water or liquid should normally be drained out of a tube located outside of firewall make sure that drain is cleared, heater core can also make this noise especially when engine coolant is low.

Air condition

Thanks for using FixYa!

This is a normal thing that all air conditioners are made to do. When you floor it the AC cuts off to give the engine more power. You might also notice this happening when you go up a steep hill. It is completely normal.

OIl leak in 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo

valve cover gasket is like $20 and a do it yourself job, just buy a manual like a chiltons from an auto parts store. if it was valve cover, the smoke would be coming from engine, not tailpipe.

rear seal is in between engine and tranny, this would cause oil to leak on ground, but not to burn

if smoke is coming from tailpipe, your piston rings might be going bad. that is an expensive repair, but switching to synthetic oil may give you several more years of life out of the piston rings, synthetic oil has a way of soaking into bad piston rings and temporarily making them like new again, unless they are already too far gone.
