The first thing you need done now is to have the engine control system module scanned for fault code(s), when the check engine light was turned on a fault code was stored in memory.
it means that you have a problem with the emission control sensors and need to have it checked out
have the fault codes read to determine if it is EVAP system fault, HO2S sensor fault or O2 sensor fault
fix what is reported
check the immobilizer as it may be preventing the ECM to allow fuel past the injectors
run the fault codes and it could be the ECM needs resetting using a scan tool
Means fuel trim lean. Not enough fuel reaching the engine. Check fuel supply from fuel pump, fuel filter(maybe clogged), if you take out fuel filter and too much dirt came out from it, then high possibility your injectors maybe clogged too. Get it cleaned. Check fuel pressure regulator that is at the end of the fuel rail. It should only open when pressure is about 3psi.Air leaks in the intake channel may also make the fuel 'lean'. Check all vacuum hoses that are connected to the intake manifold, including the one going to the brake servo. Throttle body should also be cleaned and checked. Last but not least, remove and clean the oxygen sensor.
Your EVAP purge valve may be faulty. Also, check the vaccum lines attached to the valve for any signs of wear and tear. Should be located next to the coolant tank.
GTi didn't have a TDi. Start with the simple things...plugs/wires, fuel filter. Good test is to use a set of insulated pliers to remove plug wires from plugs while the car is idling, one by one. Listen for a change in RPM. Will lead you to the right cyl if it is a wire/plug/inj. problem. Good luck...
