Check the vacuum hoses for leaks. Follow them around and make sure they're all connected and not worn out to where they had fallen off due to the hoses being old and worn out. Take some soapy water in a spray bottle and spray mist the intake and see if the idle changes. Check the big hose coming from the brake booster to the intake and make sure it's connected and in good shape. Basically check everything for vacuum leaks. It sounds like that's what you're issue is.
you could try and measure around all the pulys and figure out what size belt is needed or try calling a ford dealer or some local auto parts store, they might be able to pull up a belt size/part number for a engien that is not running a a/c compressor.
Your bushings in your starter are probly worn out. Its a fairly common problem on fords. My own mustang did it often as well. The starter is right near the exhaust manifold so sometimes when it cools down it works again a few times but you will want to get your starter changed out as soon as possible.
Could be a broken or disconnected battery cable. If you are sure that the battery has a full charge, and the battery is connected properly (tight clean connection at the terminals) and the lights do not go on (including the brake lights when you step on the brakes) then there is a bad connection at the battery/terminal/cable for certain.
You need to google it and do some searching in after market dealers and parts sales. If you go to any car shows, find someone who has a restored mustang and they will point you in the right direction.
Remove the steering column covers and you'll find the electical switch to the ignition. You'll find a rod that activates the switch from the lock and tumbler. Check for anything broken between the two.
