SOURCE: how to change a tone

The tone ring on the front is part of the CV drive-shaft (also called the halfshaft) and can only be changed by replacing the entire shaft. If you are unfamiliar with replacing drive-train and suspension components, it is best not attempted without experienced help.

The tone ring on the rear of a front wheel drive model can be replaced by removing the rear wheel hub, but on all wheel drive models, front and rear tone rings are similarly integral to the shaft.

It is unlikely that a broken tone ring would be the cause of what one might assume, in this case, is an anti-lock braking problem. Most likely causes are usually associated with the sensors that count the reluctor teeth on the spinning tone ring, or the control module(s) that process the sensor inputs and translate them into the ABS HCU (Hydraulic Control Unit) functions.

If that is the case, please refer this to a licensed technician. This is pretty much the only way we have of earning our income.

What would make my four wheel drive not work on my 2006 ford escape?

Sounds like one of the ABS tone wheels has broken. Any one of them that does not function properly will cause the 4 wheel drive to quit working. There should be an ABS fault code that triggers a dash light but perhaps not in this case. Inspect each wheel end tone wheel and if you can turn any of them without rotating the hub/ tire assembly you have found the issue

2006 escape AWD, replace front hub bearing

Rather than just the bearing, I suggest a new half shaft as the bearings and ABS tone wheel are already assembled. These Escapes are notorious for cracking the tone wheel setting off a code and then disabling the AWD system. So for a very few dollars more than it would take to disassemble the shaft , install bearings and tone wheel just get a new one.

You will have to remove the axle & replace them

There may be ways to stake it in place, if it isn't split

The tone ring you can see on the outer ends of the axles,
it has about 25 teeth on it & is used with the ABS Braking System
for a variety of things

Flashing 4wd and steady abs light on ford escape

I have a 2005 Ford Escape and have this problem. I can tell you that if the light comes on every .8 miles and blinks for 8 times, learn to live with it. After taking to dealer when it first started in about 2008, having the tone ring changed on the CV's for the tires, after been told maybe an alien lived in there....the light sell happily blinks on.If it comes on and stays on I would worry more than if it blinks intermittently. Mine has what they call "Intelligent 4-Wheel Drive" [which must be an oxymoron], but still has the 4X4 light to indicate when supposedly it switches in to 4-wheel drive according to driving conditions. Certainly if you haven't noticed any other abnormalities with how the vehicle drives this could very well be the culprit.Hope this helps.

Abs light stays on and four wheel light flashes

I just had this problem. If you notice some odd "clunking" when you brake as well, it's the ABS turning on. The problem is that there is a sensor ring near where the axle and wheel meet up called a "tone ring." They tend to crack on the Escapes. They cost about $7-$8 at Rock Auto (online, google for the address).
If you want to put it on yourself, it's a simple process...if you can get the bolts off the components.
Otherwise, don't let the dealer charge you the $500-$1000 they usually try to. Find a respectable mechanic, give them the replacement ring, and ask them to put it on. It should only take about a half hour at most with their tools.
Once the ring is replaced, it's smooth sailing.
Good luck!

Abs problem

Surely not a 700$ fix. I would take it to a garage or even better a friend and have them check the ABS system for faults. It shouldn't be much to have this checked I wouldn't pay more than $40.00 to have it done. Just tell them you want to know what wheel is having the errors. With that information you can know what wheel to check for issues. The reluctor rings are easy to brake but also easy to fix. if it is a actual sensor issues, and not cracked broke or just mud covered, I would get one used from a salvage yard. Let me know what you find out. If it is a sensor a local yard here has a few escapes in, i'm sure I could get the sensor for around $10-$20 a piece of thats alll it is. Let me know, and thank you for using
