Where does the orifice tube go?

If you are talking about the orifice tube for the A/C, it goes inside the evaporator at the end of the high pressure line. This is what allows the compressed liquid freon to expand into a gas, absorbing heat.

What is the purpose, and what is the proper location of the orifice tube in the air conditioning system on my 1991 chevy silverado?

The orifice tube restricts the flow of refrigerant to the evaporator. This restriction allows high pressure liquid freon to change into low pressure freon before entering the evaporator. The orifice tube is located inside the hose running between the condenser and the evaporator. You'll need an orifice tube removal kit if you are looking to remove it.

Orfice tube location

the fixed orifice is located in the inlet tube to the evaporator core, this is where the small high pressure AC line from the compressor connects to the tube sticking out of the engine firewall, u will most likely need a special tool to remove it, here is a web link to the tool, don't damage the evaporator core by trying to remove the orifice tube without this if it is stuck down in the tube.
