My 4runner, when its cold won't shift into 4th or overdrive. I know when it's cold it shouldn't shift into overdrive but why is it not shifting into 4th? Also its running cold for some reason so it won't shift into 4th or overdrive at all hardly. Where is the overdrive temp sensor??? Help me please!
Hello, first you need to make sure the engine gets to operating temperature, maybe the thermostat needs to be replaced, if after that it still has the same problem the temp sender could be the issue here. It is located on a housing in between the cylinder heads near the firewall where the heater hose connects. there are two temp sensors, one for the gauge on the dash and one for the computer.
The dash sensor has a single wire, the computer temp sensor has a connector with two wires and is a green connector.

i had the same problem after spending $500.00 for toyota to look at it they didnt fix it and suggested i it was the auto trans and i should get it overhauled costing thousands. i didnt believe them and started to do some of my own research into the problem. the coolant temp sensor at the rear of the intake manifold tells the ecu when the engine is at correct operating temp then allows the auto trans shift into overdrive. to rule out any problems with the auto trans i disconnected the plug to the temp sensor and went for a drive when the engine was cold and it shifted straight away into overdrive no problems. you can't leave this disconnected because the engine is hard to start when cold as the temp sensor also tells the ecu that it is cold and allows the cold start injector to inject more fuel into the engine on cold start up.to overcome this i cut the wire to the sensor plug and installed a switch which i installed into the centre console.now i start the car flick the swith use overdrive then swith back to normal after car has warmed up . engine fault light appers on dash when switched on but doesnt matter. i have had this modification for 2 years now no problems.

They had a problem with this plastic washer that is in the shifter tower it sits just under the shifter it self and gets worn out and causes this to happen- hope that helps.

First thing to do is check the fluid level if that ok you may want to think about having the transmission filter and fluid changed, there are other possibilities but check these first

YOU HAVE A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM, CHECK THE ROTATION SENSORS (2) ON THE TRANSMISSION CASE , ALSO, DRAIN A/T FLUID AND REPLACE STRAINER AND OIL
SOURCE: takes a long time to shift into overdrive
sounds like the toque converter is locking and unlocking have the trans serviced and flushed if this does not cure the problem then you could be looking at a trans rebuild or replacement.Check the fluid first could just be low.
